Hello neighbors,
Wendy and John Wagner here, neighbors to JoAndra Van Dowall. You may recognize JoAndra from seeing her in front of her home doing yard work or have had conversations with her during a walk. You may also know the family through her brother, Marc Van Valkenburg, the official snake catcher to the Meadows.
Sadly, JoAndra has been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and is now going into hospice care. I have spoken with her mother, Kay, (87) who is struggling with the situation. In trying to determine if she could provide care for JoAndra at home she told me they do not have a working refrigerator, nor a working washing machine or dryer, need plumbing to install a kitchen faucet, and she said worst of all are the bugs in the house; and now Kay has been told she will have to pay for some of the hospice expense - cost unknown at this time.
Here is a list of the most needed items:
Refrigerator – approx. $500 - $900
Exterminator – approx. $125 - $500 depending on severity and plan
Electric Dryer – approx. $450
Plumbing for washer & dryer hook up, kitchen faucet – approx. $300 - $500
House cleaning - approx. $300
This family has lived on a very minimal income for decades. They do not complain. They are active in the community with Christmas Tree Lane and have worked the polling booths at Loma Alta Park as long as I can remember, as well as volunteering at the LA Zoo for just as long.
It’s been determined that JoAndra will be going to a hospice facility. However, in becoming aware of the basic needs of this family, it seemed like a situation that could be helped and thought it would be something to put to our community of neighbors. It will make meeting these basic needs more possible if the expense is shared. Anything we can raise for them would be of such help and greatly appreciated!
