Burien Seahurst Park Beach Restoration - Joan McGilton Memorial
A group of friends and fellow community leaders have come together to propose a memorial rock and plaque to commemorate former Burien Mayor Joan McGilton's unique and essential leadership in the master planning and funding for the restoration of the beach at Seahurst Park to improve marine habitat for salmon and other endangered species and to create a field classroom, picnic and play areas for people of all ages to enjoy.
The Burien City Council has approved the installation of a memorial rock with plaque on the restored beach that resulted from Joan's hard work, dedication and perseverance. The funds will provide for the purchase, machining, transportation and placement of the rock along with a 12" x 12" bronze plaque as shown in the attached photos. The City of Burien Park's Department will coordinate and manage the location and placement of the rock.
The memorial plaque and rock will be purchased as soon as the funds are available with placement within several weeks after they are ready with a goal of placement by early next year. The funds will be collected and disbursed by the Environmental Science Center, the establishment of which was also another of Joan's contributions in her pursuit of environmental education. Contributions will be tax-deductible under IRS - 501(C)3 guidelines because gifts are made to a certified charity. Please keep a copy of your donation for tax-deductible purposes.
