Jo Real’s Gender Affirming Surgery

The Real family starts every year with a vision board, and at the start of 2023, Jo's vision board included the phrase included in the cover image above: "Big Queer Escaping the Breasts". And this vision is coming true!

It is an exciting time for Jo and all who love them– they have their gender-affirming surgery scheduled for February 12th. This surgery has been a long time coming for Jo, and I could not be prouder of them for doing the logistical, emotional, and relational work to make this freedom a reality for themselves. Of course, they have not done it all alone: the support of Nikki and the rest of their community has gotten them to this point, and we get to help Jo see this through.

This procedure is costly even with health insurance. In addition to the surgery cost, the recovery time will mean Jo will need to take time off of work and Nikki will need to act as their caregiver. 

To relieve this strain, we’re asking for financial support for The Real’s so that they can enjoy the relief and jubilee that this surgery will allow for Jo and so that they can focus on recovery. 

Anyone who knows Jo knows they are radically generous, deeply thoughtful, and playful in their compassion. We now have the opportunity to care for them in this joyous time and partake in this jubilee.
