Jo's Top Surgery Fund
Donation protected
Howdy y’all.
I’m incredibly excited to announce that I am finally getting Top Surgery! I have a tentative date for January 2025 which is why I have chosen to launch this GoFundMe now.
This has been a hill to climb, but I have found a clinic in Sweden that will support my informed consent decision for surgery. As a hairstylist, that means I’ll be on an 8 WEEK long recovery journey before I’m allowed to return doing hair full time, behind the chair. This break is detrimental as it’s my only source of income, so saving for this gender affirming care has taken me some time. While I have enough set aside for my expenses while off work, I am looking for donations toward the cost of surgery, travel, care, insurance, and accommodation.
The NHS Waiting List is unending at this point for access to the gender affirming care clinic and surgeries, so that is not an option for me. Private care in the UK is complicated with timelines and WPATH letters as someone who recently moved back. So, I have found an informed consent surgeon in Sweden who will perform the surgery. This means I will travel for consultation, surgery, and two weeks of recovery. Donations will cover the expense of my carers travel and the lodging needed while I wait for my follow up appointment at the clinic two weeks later. After that follow up, I’ll return home to Glasgow and recover for the remaining 6 weeks. I’m following the recommendations of the surgeon in terms of a timeline to return to work, but the long frame of that could be 8 weeks.
Coming out as nonbinary so many years ago, opened my life to such a beautiful community. Being a hairstylist and getting to help others on their gender expression journey has fulfilled my life. Every year I would see some of my clients and friends pursue their gender affirming care and I would just tell myself that my time would come soon enough so I continued to wear my binder day after day. Years later, we are finally here, and while I have helped crowd source for others, it’s finally time to accept that care for myself. Thank you for all of your love and support and if donating isn’t an option for you, please kindly share this post that possibly someone else can see it.
any additional funds will be donated to other gender affirming care gofundme’s.
