Running For Recovery
Donation protected
On April 19th, a group of 5 friends will line up to run the 2021 Boston Marathon. Completing the 26.2 mile trek through the streets of Boston is a goal for many runners, but with your help we will achieve a goal more significant than any race, medal, or finish line. Together we believe in using this opportunity to bring awareness and raise funds for an organization that positively impacts our community by providing recovery support for those struggling with addiction, The Davis Direction Foundation. We hope you’ll join us on this journey as we train to complete the world’s oldest continuous marathon, while attempting to each raise $2,620 ($13,100 toal) to shine a light on something that affects so many in our community.
The Team/Who We Are:
Each of us was born and raised in the great state of Georgia, and met while running Track and Cross Country for The University of Georgia. Our team consists of Daniel Navarro, Jonathan Pelham, Zack Sims, Jon Moses, and Wade Voyles; five guys who probably ran a little too much, but learned more about each other, life, and brotherhood along the way.
Our Why:
On March 4th, 2014 the Owen’s family tragically lost their eldest son, Davis, from a heroin overdose. The "Owen7" had unexpectedly lost a member of their tight knit family, and the thought of going on without him became a journey of pain and determination. After the family decided to go public with their son's addiction and story of his tragic death, emails began to flood their inboxes asking for help and support. Quickly, the family came to realize this tragedy was beginning to transform into something that they would have never imagined. Soon thereafter, the Owens created The Davis Direction Foundation with the hope to save another family, another brother, mother, father, and sister from enduring the same pain they experienced because of addiction.
The Foundation has created a safe space called "The Zone" located just outside of Marietta Square. This space allows individuals who have been struggling with addiction to come to a safe space and focus on creating a healthier lifestyle for themselves. The Zone has had over 36,000 visits since opening its doors. To aid those who walk through their doors, the Zone offers several free services that range from help with future housing, job searches, peer support, and so much more. The mission of The Davis Direction Foundation is to “Fight Addiction and Fuel Recovery.”
Through this fundraiser, we hope to bring more awareness to an epidemic that is affecting more and more families by the day. Addiction and drugs have a very potent stigma; therefore, they can often be a hard subject to broach and be open about. We want to challenge ourselves, our peers, and this stigma by starting the conversation, fostering an open dialogue, providing more information, and presenting various outlets on how to combat addiction. We want to assist the Zone in promoting a life of recovery for any individual who is struggling to take that next step towards a healthier lifestyle; because the truth of the matter is, we all know someone struggling with addiction, whether they have told us or not.
We hope you’ll consider contributing and following along on our road to Boston! Please select the team member you would like your donation to be associated with!
Thanks again,
Jonathan, Daniel, Wade, Jon, & Zack
***Daniel will be pulling the money into an account and donating it all directly to the Davis Direction Foundation
