Introduction and Background

I am an engineer by profession and my hobby is to create audio books in my mother tongue which is Bengali, an Indian language. I publish my audiobooks through internet. One day in 2012 a person sent me an email from West Bengal, India that he is blind and he works for a blind school where they regularly listen my audio books. He also wrote that they do not have many books in Braille and that’s why they cannot read all books. But as I narrate the stories, they can simply listen to it. It really touched me. I was creating audio books as my hobby for those people who do not have time to read. I never thought of making audio books for blind people, it never came to my mind. After knowing this I started asking more questions about the school and I learned that it is in a rural village of West Bengal, India. Majority of the students are very poor, school provides them boarding, lodging and study materials in Braille. The facility provides special arrangement for its students keeping in mind the requirements of the blind kids. The school gets a nominal funding from Government sources which is not at all sufficient for running the school with teachers, staff and boarding facilities. So they need people like you and me who can donate and help these unfortunate kids to continue their education. For them, education or light of knowledge is the only thing that can change their life. Without education, these kids would have no means to lead a good life and might end up begging in the streets. For last 7 years we raised $1500 using  Indiegogo/GoFundMe platform and supported 10 sightless students each year to complete their education for one year. This year also I need your help to support 10 sightness students. 8 of them retained from last year and 2 students were added in place of 2 who graduated from middle school.

Description of the campaign and why it’s important to me

It is really very tough for a blind kid to continue his/her education. In India, it is even tougher due to lack of infrastructure, poverty and lack of social awareness. For these 10 blind kids in Krishanagar India, education is the only means available to them for social recognition. Krishnanagar Helen Keller Vidhyapith is the place where blind kids can study up to middle school. The school provides education, study materials in braille and living assistance in dorm. Each student requires $150 for his/her expense in the school for one year. I on behalf of Aiducate Now, a California based non profit public benefit corporation (IRS Employer Identification Number - 26-2650992) am seeking $1500 for supporting these 10 poor blind kids for next school year. Failure to provide this amount to the kids could result in discontinuation of school for some of them. Please donate and help the blind kids to get the light of knowledge. This project is very close to my heart because my Grandfather became blind at an age of 58. I have seen how difficult his life became after he lost his sight. Life became horrible for him and infrastructure was not there to support him. My grandfather was not poor, his biggest problem was he could not see. But these 10 blind kids I choose are very poor. So with a little monetary help, at least they will be able to get some education and live a respectful life.

How much funding I need and where it’s going

Each student requires a scholarship of $150 per year which will cover their school fee, study materials in Braille, audio books and hostel fee. So I will require $1500 for supporting 10 blind students for a year. Your entire donations will go to the Krishnanagar Helen Keller Vidyapith and Shaktinagar High School in West Bengal, India.

My track record with projects like this

I raised donations with AiducateNow for 10 sightless students in India for last 7 years. Each year I raised around $1600 to support 10 sightless students.

I always try to help underprivileged kids. In year 2010,I read in newspaper about a 3 months old kid named Kaushik Debnath from Tripura, India who needed a difficult heart surgery but his parents being very poor were not able to afford. I contacted my friends and through emails and Facebook and I collected some money which was not sufficient. Then I contacted a non-profit organization named Pashchimi and their donor base donated a lot. I collected a little over $2000 which helped Kaushik's parents pay for the heart surgery. Thanks to the surgery, now Kaushik is leading a normal life.
