Help Mobius Fields grow more flowers
Earth laughs in flowers.
~Emerson
Mobius Fields celebrates its 10th birthday in March! In our first 10 years, we’ve grown a lot of vegetables, fed a lot of our neighbors, educated a lot of kids and adults about growing their own good food, and committed to helping secure the food system in our little corner of the world. We are honored to have steadfast customers, market management, chefs, farming colleagues, friends and family. Y’all have been so faithful in your support of our efforts. Thank you.
We have been successful in all the ways that matter most. Our mission has always been to grow -and help others grow- the most nutritious food possible. We believe that good food powers each of you in your own mission on Earth. Cukes and tomatoes don’t make a lot of profit, bouquets do. In the last couple of years we’ve added flowers to our edible crops and your responses have been clear - beauty is nutritious too.
As we enter our second decade, we are excited to share that we will be growing a LOT more flowers. We will always grow food! But bouquets have a higher return and will give Mobius Fields some needed financial stability.
We need your help to make this transition. While many of the tools and supplies we use for vegetables can be used for flowers too, there are some essential new things we need. With your support, we’ll open up a new field: hiring someone to till it, adding mounds of compost and other soil amendments, and putting down landscape fabric. Things as mundane as fencing, posts for trellising, and buckets really add up. We’ll need a lot more dahlia tubers, perennial foliage plants and flowers, and a multitude of flower seeds. The quantity of flowers we’ll be harvesting each week means we’ll also need to re-work our market display to accommodate more bouquets. Finally, we can only deliver blooms at the height of their beauty with plenty of vase life if we have a walk-in cooler.
We’re joining a growing movement to reduce the carbon footprint of cut flowers. Did you know that more than 80% of the flowers used by florists and in grocery store bouquets are grown outside of the U.S? We know you value locally grown food and understand that flowers, too, should be grown close to home. This has the added benefit of extending the vase life of your bouquets and keeping more of your dollars in the local economy.
Our goal is ambitious. Whatever you can throw in the pot helps! We are so grateful to have an amazing community around us and we know we can count on your help to take this step toward securing the future of Mobius Fields.
Can’t wait to show you what we’re growing!
Warmly,
Deb and Paul
