Jing Li - Bach Solo Project

Donation protected
HI there, and thank you for clicking this far!

Jing and I are writing to you regarding a campaign for her solo Bach project, “The 7th Cello Suite”. Over 2 years ago, Jing began transcribing the Bach d minor Violin Partita for cello. For those who don’t have a background in music, this is akin to transcribing a novel from one language to another, while still maintaining all the colloquial, syntactical, and prose-like characteristics from the original language. So you know… easy peasy.

I’m extraordinarily proud of what she’s accomplished, and last year “nudged” her (read: “arm twisted”), to perform the work for the first time in concert at the very welcoming Fridman Gallery in SoHo (at 8 months pregnant, though no less gorgeous or musically formidable!), and at a house concert hosted by an extremely warm, generous and welcoming patron couple.

“Classic” repertoire is just that; classic. It’s rarely updated, or thoughtfully reimagined, and when it is, it’s often for lack of better ideas (Dvorak’s “VIOLA concerto, anyone?!:). However, while I’m obviously biased, what Jing has accomplished needs to be recorded for a broader audience to experience, as well as published for artists and future generations to learn for their own performances and enjoyment. So in April, on the stage at The Academy of Arts and Letters in NYC, and the same place Jing’s mentor Janos Starker last recorded his Cello Suites, Jing has the opportunity to do something rare: to be the first artist to record a major work in a new way, and put it out into the world, hopefully further expanding the “basic” repertoire of cellists everywhere.

How are we going to allocate the funds raised?

The funds raised from this campaign will go directly to the following:

recording venue rental fees
Sound engineer fees (12+ hours of recording time; set-up, and break-down time)
Post production (mixing, mastering)
CD production & promotion; and yes,
Babysitting/Childcare (because apparently after one has a child, even finding practice time costs $$… who knew?!?)
So how can you help?

As we’re not comfortable asking for something for nothing, we’ve devised the following (suggested) schedule:

$1000+ : private house concert (Boston, Philadelphia, or Washington D.C. areas)
$750+ : private house concert (NYC area) + CD
$250+ : private 1 hr cello lesson/s + CD
$150+ : private 1/2 hour cello lesson + CD
$75+ : Signed CD
$75 and under (you can enter your own amount in the field provided): enormous amount of gratitude, hugs, and Antonia’s offer to lovingly slobber on you.
It is important we note that although we are sending this to you, we completely understand you may not be in a position to donate at this time. Many people and projects compete these days for unique projects as well, diffusing attention and resources, or have projects/children/dependents/furry family (pets) that need your resources as well. We get it :) But if you are able, we are incredibly grateful.

Lastly, thank you to all who came out last June to support Jing in concert, and we look forward to sharing the finished product with you all!

Gratefully, Jing and David
