JJSE Raza Students Explore Border
Donation protected
June Jordan School for Equity students who are part of La Raza Collective are organizing a trip to the border town of San Diego, California to explore their identity and stand in solidarity with border communities.
The idea was conceived in a meeting where students expressed the desire to learn about their culture, history, and identity while connecting with other communities outside of their own in San Francisco.
We are asking for your help to fund this educational trip for 12-15 students in May 2017. During their stay, students will visit important historical sites in San Diego such as Chicano Park and El Centro Cultural de la Raza. They will tour the U.S. /Mexico Border and volunteer with Ángeles del Desierto in providing humanitarian aid to migrants crossing the desert. They will also visit local universities, student centers, and meet with community organizations to learn about the struggles people face and the movements that they lead.

Throughout the trip, students will engage in conversations around identity and social justice. Students will then return to San Francisco and share their experiences with their families and communities in the form of a presentation.

While we have secured free lodging, we specifically need help to pay for transportation and food expenses. We estimate that gas for the three cars that will be used to travel to, from, and in San Diego will cost approximately $800. We also estimate that food– breakfast, lunch, and dinner– for the total lenght of the trip (5 days) and for 15 people will cost $1525. After the financial assistance that our school is able to provide, we must still fundraise $1500.
We thank you for your time and appreciate any donation that you can make to this important experience for our students.
