In late August, 2021, Jose J Ortiz Carlo (known as JJ by his peers and pupils) was diagnosed with soft-tissue Sarcoma, a type of rare cancer in adults that primarily targets connective tissue. In JJ’s case, the affected area is located deep within his ankle and is progressively affecting his mobility and health.

 

Soon after diagnosis, a treatment recommendation of amputation was suggested by his primary specialist located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. For the sake of exhausting all options and finding a better alternative to this initial treatment, JJ was referred to specialists located in Memorial Sloane Kettering – Rockefeller in New York City. He is leaving for New York City on Saturday, November 13, 2021 with no determinate end date.

 

While JJ has medical insurance that covers part of his visit and some additional treatments, the road he’s on is a long and unforeseeable one with multiple treatments, hotel stays, flights, specialist visits, and caretaker facilities for his 90-year old mother.

A finales de agosto de 2021, José J Ortiz Carlo (conocido como JJ por sus compañeros y alumnos) fue diagnosticado con sarcoma de tejidos blandos, un tipo de cáncer raro en adultos que se dirige principalmente al tejido conectivo. En el caso de JJ, la zona afectada se encuentra en lo profundo de su tobillo y está afectando progresivamente su movilidad y salud.

 

Poco después del diagnóstico, su especialista primario ubicado en San Juan, Puerto Rico, le recomendó amputación como tratamiento para el tobillo afectado. En esperanzas de agotar todas las opciones y encontrar una mejor alternativa a este tratamiento inicial, JJ fue remitido a especialistas ubicados en Memorial Sloane Kettering – Rockefeller en la ciudad de Nueva York. Se irá a la ciudad de Nueva York el sábado 13 de noviembre de 2021 sin una fecha de finalización determinada.

 

Aunque JJ tiene un seguro médico que cubre parte de su visita y algunos tratamientos adicionales, el camino en el que se encuentra es largo e imprevisible con múltiples tratamientos, estadías en hoteles, vuelos, visitas a especialistas y cuidado para su madre de 90 años.
