The Play

Ella Blair is a rising star in the online video scene. Together with the help of her friend, Kat Daniels, a budding fashion photographer, Ella's building a platform around sustainable fashion. When an opportunity arises to "collab" with superstar influencer Max Jessup on his latest video art project, Ella jumps headlong into it...but at what cost?

The Collab is a story about fame, friendship, and the #MeToo movement in the online sphere

Written by actor and writer Lauren Morley who is longlisted for The Women's Prize for Playwriting!

Our Story

We began the work for The Collab with a scratch night in January of 2019 as a part of Aequitas Theatre Company's Identity Season. We then raised money for an R&D which took place in November 2019 and culminated in a reading at the Arcola Theatre in Hackney. The money we raised paid for the venue and the actors. It was a crucial step in our process but not the final step. The reading allowed the writer, Lauren Morley, to make tweaks and brought the piece to the attention of The Space, a theatre in the Isle of Dogs, London.

The Space originally accepted us onto their 2020 summer season and invested their time heavily in the play. They worked with Lauren dramaturgically and Rachael production-wise. For anyone who saw the reading or the scratch night, the play is drastically different and has grown with their help and with Lauren's hard work. We were set to put it on as one of Aequitas's most innovative shows.

And then the pandemic hit. Theatres were closed. When The Space reopened, it became clear we did not have enough money to pay for actors, set, props, and costumes with a socially distanced audience and we hesitated, waiting for the pandemic to be over. We were postponed until January 2021 - and another lockdown hit us then too. Socially distancing an audience on the fringe means that instead of 60 seats, we can only have a maximum of 20, meaning it is almost impossible to recoup costs.

We are currently raising money for a two week run of the show in Spring 2022. The Space have made it clear that we can reschedule whenever we can afford the costs and so we have decided to ask for help in fundraising to cover the cost we would lose in ticket sales. As this was our primary income for funding, you can imagine we need the help. We also have to factor into our cost any contingencies or changes, as the global situation is constantly evolving. We are hopeful that we can, with your help, ensure that our actors will get a fair wage even in this time when so many actors are out of work entirely.

The Company

Formed in 2015, Aequitas Theatre Company has a track record of making innovative work with a commentary on social and political issues. For the Collab, the company will delve into mixed media—a goal of theirs since the start. Below are some reviews of a sampling of their work.

Previous Reviews:

ebaby: Jane Cafarella’s award-winning play follows Catherine and her American surrogate Nellie’s experiences with wit, warmth and compassion… Heart-breaking, joyous and painfully honest, e-baby is a play you won’t want to miss. ★★★★ Fairy Powered Productions

Fear and Misery of the Third Reich: ‘An important and apt revival for these troubling times.’ ★★★★

The Venue

The Space works relentlessly to support art from their wonderful location nested along the Thames in the Isle of Dogs. While 2020 has been a challenge for all, The Space became innovative and raised money to remain open and keep morale and culture alive by supporting artists through their Locked Down Looking Up scheme. Even funding playwright Laura Horton, who became Plymouth's Poet Laureate this year!

Throughout the development of our project, The Space are not only accommodating of changes due to COVID-19 but also, they are consistently providing their advice and guidance - illustrating their belief in Aequitas Company and The Collab.

They excel because they're a great venue who believe in good work and do all they can to bring it to life. We are overjoyed that they support this show!

Costs

We’re looking to raise £2000 via crowdfunder as well as applying for grants. Your donations on this crowdfunder will go directly towards the actors’ and writer’s wages. Money raised through grants will go towards PPE and testing to ensure that we can safely create this work in the current situation, and any additional materials/wages for designers and crew. If we exceed our crowdfunding goal, those funds will go to our wonderful venue, The Space, to make up for the lost ticket revenue that accompanies socially distanced seating arrangements, which will remain necessary to keep audiences able to enjoy theatre safely. We would be overjoyed if you could help us reach this goal!
