Recovery for Crossing Guard Susie Turner

Donation protected
Susie Turner has lived in Danvers, MA with her family for over twenty years. She loves her town and is an active member of the community. She is a member of the Danvers Garden Club, founder of Christmas on the River, co-founder of the Sweet Williams Country Fair, was a faithful Salem News carrier for over 400 Danvers residents, and a dedicated Danvers crossing guard for 19 years up until the day of the accident.

On January 8th at approximately 7:00am, Susie was doing her typical crossing guard duties, stopping traffic in order to let a child safely cross the street, when a car came flying down the road and struck her head on. The impact sent Susie up over the vehicle and momentarily airborne before she landed on the pavement. The driver hit her at such a speed that Susie's head cracked the car windshield. Thankfully, no children were hurt.

Susie was rushed to a local hospital where they determined her injuries were so severe, she must be med-flighted to another facility. Susie was in an induced coma for several days due to the severity of her injuries. The back of her head had been split open, she had skull fractures, her brain was bleeding in several areas, she had broken ribs, fractured spine, broken arm and shoulder, broken pelvis, fractured leg and ankle. She was hospitalized nearly a month just to get to the point where it was safe for her to come home and finish her healing journey.

All of the doctors said it was a miracle that she survived this ordeal. Susie is also a kidney transplant recipient and, to everyone's surprise and relief, the kidney is doing fine.

Now that she is home, she must partake in several hours of OT/PT every week, countless doctor appointments, she is constantly in pain, needs assistance while walking, bathing, dressing, as well as other basic daily tasks... her whole life has been turned upside down. She has lost the quality of life she had before the accident, as well as two means of income.

Susie still has a year or more of recovery ahead of her, and she may never be the same again. Funds are being raised to help Susie and her family deal with her long term health issues sustained from this horrible accident. Susie and her family are so touched and grateful for the community's outreach of love, cards and meals. They feel truly blessed to be a part of the Danvers community. Your support is so very much appreciated during this difficult time in Susie's life.
