Jitmoud Scholarship Fund

Al-Salam Day School (ADS) has established the Jitmoud
Scholarship Fund in memory of Br. Salahuddin Jitmoud and to honor the Jitmoud family. 

Salahuddin Jitmoud, the son of the principal of Al-Salam Day School, was violently taken from his family on the evening of Sunday, April 19, 2015. 

Br. Salahuddin was a very creative, humble, and thoughtful 22-year-old who wanted to make his mark on the world. He traveled, wrote poetry and music, and was involved in filmmaking. He volunteered in his community, as he did at a mosque fundraiser and dinner the night before he passed away.

As ADS faced the challenge of welcoming back the Mudir (principal) after the sad news, we looked to lessons the Mudir taught students and faculty during the school year, including lessons on charity, patience, unity, and humility. We also remembered the Mudir's famous quote, "Islamic education is the right of every child." 

To honor Br. Salahuddin's memory and allow for sadaqa jariya (ceaseless charity) in his name, we ask that you make a donation to the Jitmoud Scholarship Fund.

Al-Salam Day School will use this scholarship money to recognize students who represent the best character traits we instill in our students, many of the traits that Br. Salahuddin himself exemplified.  We will also recognize the teachers who instill these traits in our students, insha'Allah.

Funds raised for the Jitmoud Scholarship Fund will benefit the Salahuddin Jitmoud Excellence of Character Award, the Jamila Kolocotronis Teacher of the Year Award, the Jitmoud Education Award, and the ADS Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Students awarded the Salahuddin Jitmoud Excellence of Character Award will be chosen based on merit, with students nominated for Student of the Year qualifying to be recognized with Salahuddin Jitmoud Excellence of Character Award.

The Jitmoud ADS Award will be awarded to one boy and one girl in the following school year based on merit and, in some cases, financial need, insha'Allah.

The Jamila Kolocotronis Teacher of the Year Award was named after the late wife of Mudir Jitmoud and mother to their six sons.  Sr. Jamila was an educator, another creative force in the family, and author of many books. She passed away only two years ago. 

The ADS Scholarship Endowment Fund will be awarded to ADS graduating seniors who will apply for the scholarship with a written statement to be determined. The endowment was started to ensure all ADS students have the opportunity to continue their education after graduation.

Br. Salahuddin was always striving to be better, and insha'Allah, may we do the same.

"I spent every day last year (...) trying to focus on doing better, but, today, the tug-of-war is still the same, despite all the new, crazy things I've learned and experienced. It's been a really long year and I'm not sure where it's left me, but, insha Allah, I'm still alive to continue to work on doing better," Br. Salahuddin Jitmoud once wrote.

May Allah (SWT) reward Br. Salahuddin, the late Sr. Jamila Kolocotronis, and all muslims Jannat Al-Firdaws, inshaAllah.
