Jin's Cancer & Stem Cell Transplant Recovery

Jin Xiao is a federal public servant, husband and father in the Ottawa/Outaouais area. He and his wife Guang Shen are loving parents to two beautiful and talented teenage daughters and they are a very close family unit.

 

 

In early 2021, Jin was diagnosed with Stage 4 Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma. Unfortunately his chemotherapy treatments were not enough to get him into remission and the lymphoma spread to his brain. After more intensive chemo treatments, at the end of October 2021, Jin received an autologous stem cell transplant (using his own stem cells). Jin has a long road to recovery that will require him to be out of work for at least a year and could possibly take longer as it can take up to three years for adults to fully recover from transplant. In fact many cancer and stem cell transplant survivors are unable to return to work because they are left with long term side effects from the various treatments during cancer that leave them debilitated. While doctors are hopeful that Jin will make a full recovery, this will take time.

 

Guang is currently on leave from work to be Jin's caregiver and her insurance company has recently decided to end her long term disability. She has applied for Employment Insurance, but will make only about 40% of her wage on EI and will have a maximum of 15 weeks. They live far away from family  and need the help of friends and colleagues right now.

 

 

 

Guang and Jin are very kind and giving people who are always helping others. They did not want to ask for or take offered help during this challenging time for so many others. Those of us who care about and love them have encouraged them to let us do this to help their family until they are able to get back to normal life. All funds will be used by the family to purchase groceries, pay bills and any additional medical expenses during Jin's recovery.
