In 1998, my only goal was to climb the corporate ladder and make as much money as possible. 5 years into my career, motivated only by financial gain, I was reaching my goal. However, as I am now able to acknowledge, I started to feel an emptiness and void in my soul. I had to learn the hard way that money was not a sustainable motivation for my career.
Unfortunately for me, a suicide attempt and a diagnosis of BiPolar II Disorder, slowly opened my eyes to who I really am. I suppressed my feelings and emotions for 28 years and let them boil over within me. This was a huge turning point in my life. I was finally able to grasp my unhappiness and acknowledge that I had a serious lack of meaning in my life.
After this terrifying experience, and despite that fact that I had zero passion for it, I decided to go back to being a Management Consultant. This was the “safe” or “logical” choice at the time. After years of psychotherapy and examining my life from an emotional perspective, I knew this was a major issue and I needed to try a new career. But I was “scared “of the unknown and still thought I could not afford to take a pay cut.
After 9 years and multiple depressive episodes, I finally realized I needed a change. In 2012 I was in between jobs and my plan was to find another job in the consulting industry. But I realized, I am a passionate person, emotional, full of vivid feelings in my soul. My life needs true passion, emotion and motivation to reach my goals. I needed to take a risk and go for it.
Totally, out of thin air, I thought to myself I should try stand up comedy. So I signed up for a stand up comedy class at Gotham Comedy Club. From the first time I hit the stage, I could feel the passion, the natural high, the motivation to continue my path as a stand up comedian. This may sound cliché, but I feel so alive when I am performing. It is a natural high, that I want in my life everyday for the rest of my life.
What if I was destined to be a stand up comedian / entertainer?
In 2 years of stand up comedy, there are glimmers of opportunities / accomplishments that tell me I need to continue:
