Cancer, Covid and a lost business because of Covid haven't beaten us yet and we don't want Hurricane Ian to do it either.

My name is Jim and until last week's storm, my recent cancer-survivor wife Soraya and I lived in a duplex apartment on a canal in Cape Coral Florida. After a mandatory evacuation was issued the day before the storm, we evacuated with our Shih Tzu, Chanel, to my brother's home in Sebring, FL -- about 140 miles away.

After the storm, we learned that our renters' insurance would not cover our belongings due to it being a flood situation. Water covered every floor in our home and was up to a foot in some places. We were able to salvage some furniture and electronics, but clothes and furniture absorbed the moldy smell that permeates the air there now.

We did lose a car in the flood, but the insurance company wants an official repair estimate from the dealer before we proceed with a claim. The dealer wants $820 to do the estimate. We just hired a U-Haul and procured storage in Sebring, and the bills are adding up quickly, as we are already having to replace clothing and basic items.
