Hi, my name is Emily Schaumberg. I’m Jim’s daughter in law. Me and Nicki (Jim’s daughter) will be running this page. Jim is a retired member of the Forest City Fire Department with over 20 years of service. He also currently works for the Garner school district. Early Monday morning I received a phone call that no one wants to receive. We believe Jimmy had a massive heart attack Monday morning. Medics on scene preformed CPR on him for approximately 50 minutes, and shocked him twice . They eventually got a pulse back and flew him to mercy. His heart stopped again enroute and they started CPR once again. Thankfully they were able to get his heart started once again. Since then Jim has been on a ventilator and has been put on paralytics to keep him sedated and relaxed. They started Jim almost immediately on a treatment called Therapeutic hypothermia. They cooled down his core temperature down to 33 degrees Celsius for 24 hours then slowly re-warmed him up over 16 hours. This was to stop any more brain damage. Yesterday morning Jim shocked us all when he opened his eyes and eventually squeezed our hands. We were not expecting this and we’re expecting a very different outcome. Jim still has a very very long road ahead of him as we still do not know how much brain damage he may have, what caused his sudden cardiac arrest, or what else may have been affected. Jim could potentially be in the hospital for weeks to months, and still have to undergo rehabilitation and therapy. We are asking for help for Jim’s medical expenses and Debbie’s (his wife) trips going back and forth from Forest City to Mason City, Food, and time off of work.
