Hi, I have set up this fundraiser for Jim Nimmo (who is also known as “Nemo” to many of his friends) and his wife Juana.
Jim has been a fixture in the Kansas City area for many years through his photography, work in the service and cannabis industry, and as an entertainer.
As some of you may know, Jim was recently diagnosed with cancer. This started with what was thought to be a basically normal viral infection several weeks back. His symptoms and fever persisted over two weeks, so more testing was done to try and determine a cause. The basic lab results were concerning enough that he was advised to seek immediate evaluation in the emergency department at St. Luke’s, where he was originally admitted. After several days inpatient, St. Luke’s recommended transfer to the University of Kansas Medical Center for more specialized testing. They eventually determined he had two forms of blood cancer with a very poor prognosis. He was told that, even with treatment, his chances of any sort of recovery were minuscule. Jim and Juana decided to opt for hospice care instead and started this about a week ago. His oncologist advised him that his current life expectancy is only a few weeks at best.
Despite his diagnosis and pain, he is soldiering on in his usual curmudgeonly, lovable way. If you know “Nemo”, you know what I mean! Juana jokingly describes Jim’s hospice caregivers as his ”victims.”
I wish I didn’t have to write any of this. Jim and I recently went through the death of a mutual friend by gun violence. He had my back then, so I am trying to have his back now. My world will be less bright without him and I know I’m not alone.
Having been in healthcare for my entire career, I know the something of the struggles Jim and Juana are/will be experiencing financially. Jim is obviously no longer able to work, so no money is coming in since his diagnosis. The system doesn’t care, so the bills will keep coming.
Jim has many friends that I don’t know, but whose lives have been touched in a way only “Nemo” could. Any donation, no matter how small, will help.
Love to you all.
