James "Jim" Browne -- lovingly known by many as Jimbo or Agent 86 -- was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of person. A gifted athlete, devoted coach, proud father, and everyday gentle soul, he lit up every room he entered with his energy, humour, and warmth.
Jim was a hometown high school quarterback legend, a multi-sport standout scouted by professional football and baseball teams, and a passionate mentor who coached both of his children through countless seasons. He spent most of his professional career in the airline industry, where his deep love for connecting with people made him unforgettable.
In 2023, we lost Jim to complications related to frontotemporal dementia. He had been diagnosed in 2020, and in the final chapter of his life, we saw how devastating this illness can be -- especially for someone so full of life and love as Jim was.
Since then, our family -- Jim's children Samantha and Joshua, and his wife Stephanie -- have been thinking about how to honor his legacy in a way that reflects who he truly was: a champion for others, especially women in sport, and someone who believed in the transformative power of travel, sport, and human connection.
On what would have been his 76th birthday, we're launching the Jim Browne Memorial Scholarship to support female athletes in pursuing international competition opportunities. Whether it's funding travel for a once-in-a-lifetime tournament or helping a young woman step onto the world stage for the first time, this scholarship is about opening doors -- just as Jim always did for others.
We hope this fund becomes more than financial support. We want it to tell his story to people who never got the change to meet him, to inspire young athletes the way he inspired us, and to keep his legacy alive in motion, in growth, and in connection.
If you're able to give -- no matter the amount -- or simply share this with your community, we would be deeply grateful. Thank you for helping us celebrate a man who gave so much and believed so deeply in the potential of others.
With love,
Samantha, Joshua, and Stephanie Browne
*A small note: This is our very first year starting the Jim Browne Memorial Scholarship. While we're not yet a formal or registered scholarship organization, every dollar raised will go directly toward supporting young female athletes with travel and competition expenses, as we work to build this fund and grow its impact in the years to come. Thank you for believing in this vision and helping us honour Jim in such a meaningful way.
