My Brother's Keeper

James Millet, Jimmy, JJ, Lil’ bro... he goes by many names, but to most he’s a hero. There has never been a time when someone asked what James was up to, and they didn’t shake their head and smile when Jim filled them in on his “typical” weekend that consisted of jumping out of a plane or swimming with sharks. “Adventure-seeker” and “lover of life” doesn’t scratch the surface when it comes to describing the vibrant life of Jimmy, a brother, a son, an uncle, and best friend, well loved by all who know him.

No one deserves to be dealt with unlucky cards in life, but it made it so much more surreal to James and his family as his world was turned upside down recently due to an accident that could happen to anyone: carbon monoxide poisoning. Living far from family in California, Jim was lucky to have been with people when he suddenly fell seriously ill and was admitted to the hospital October 27th. After quickly being discharged with no answers and no idea what was wrong, he continued to have seizures and life-threatening complications. Jim was desperate and miraculously made the trip to Florida to have a trusted and dedicated team of specialists work hard on his case, finally diagnosing him with carbon monoxide poisoning - a diagnosis that was missed at the previous hospital.

This vibrant, full-of-life, always-smiling man is now bedridden. He cannot walk, cannot talk, cannot feed himself. His brain had been deprived of vital oxygen. If he was diagnosed earlier, maybe this wouldn’t have happened, but the Lord only tests those who He knows is capable. Jim is stuck in a hospital, a 20-hour drive away from his family. He cannot be transported home until he is stable and able to walk, which is going to take extensive therapy and rehabilitation to just get him to walk and speak again. Not an easy feat, but there is not a Millet that will turn down a good fight!

On top of needing speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutritional therapy, cognitive therapy, nursing care, and behavioral rehabilitation, Jim’s medical bills quickly became astronomical and continue to skyrocket every minute he spends in the hospital and will continue for months after. The plan is to do whatever it takes to get Jimmy back home before Christmas to Strong Hospital so that he can be closer to family. The medical bills will continue to increase, needing long-term care but at least he will be surrounded by his loving and supportive family. Having limited medical insurance, Jim and his family are humbly asking friends and family to please consider helping to alleviate the enormous burden so that Jim can continue to focus on healing. Now is the time to give back to Jim, who lives his life serving and caring for others without a second thought. No matter the amount, it will be incredibly appreciated!
