My name is Dan McAleenan, father to Connor McAleenan.
On October 6th, 2015, our 24 year old son Connor suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for nearly 3 weeks. Initially, he was completely unresonsive to any kind of stimulus and was unable to breathe on his own. Fortunately, Connor's injury occurred within 2 miles of a highly rated trauma hospital and the EMTs, who initially saved his life, were able to get him to the hospital quickly. Due to the severity of his injuries and the almost non-existent brain activity, the neurosurgeon on duty chose not to do surgery, as he feared he would only "create a vegetable." However, by God's grace and, we believe, in response to the prayers of many, 6 hours after arriving in ICU Connor showed signs of life by coughing when a Respiratory Therapist was performing a routine procedure. In response, the Neurosurgeon performed an emergency craniotomy to relieve pressure on his brain and, in so doing, gave him a chance at life. Following 48 days in the ICU, he transfered to an in-patient facility and completed a 30 day rehab program for TBI patients. He is now at home with us and continuing outpatient therapy. He has one more surgery and at least a year of intense mental and physical rehabilitation work ahead.
Fortunately, I kept Connor on my health insurance program and we are covering the deductible for 2015 and 2016, as well as other non-covered, but associated expenses. That said, Connor is unable to work, and we don't know if or when he'll be able to. Stephanie, his mother, has become his full time care giver. It is an intense and demanding job, with little time for rest or relief. Connor's condition generates many unplanned and uncovered expenses. After this month, we will be responsible for paying for any therapy (Physical, Occupational, Speech) sessions, which are essential to his full recovery, and will likely be needed for this coming year. Initial estimates are $800 per session. In addition, we are scheduling in-home nursing care a couple of times per week to allow Steph to have time for other responsibilities, or just for a brief rest.
We have applied for disability income for Connor through Social Security, but have not yet received confirmation or compensation. We will do all we can with the resources we have to provide for Connor's care. I'm not at all comfortable asking for your help, but expenses for his care are mounting. Many have suggested fundraising as a means of allowing others to help bless Connor. In fact, some of you have already contributed on his behalf. We appreciate any consideration you give to this opportunity. Give it thought and prayer, but please feel no pressure. If you have the capacity and desire to help, we--and Connor--will be forever grateful.
Only by grace,
Dan and Stephanie
