Cure for Kate

Our friend and colleague Kate was diagnosed with B Cell Prolymphocytic Leukaemia (B-PLL for short) in 2011 and was given only 2 years to live. B-PLL is an extremely rare blood cancer. Kate bravely went through many years of chemotherapy but it wasn’t successful for her type of cancer, and other treatment options were limited ….…things were looking very grim.
Then in 2015, Kate was accepted into an American drug trial to boost her immune system……it was a long shot but Kate and her family had to give it a go. The trial was successful for only two people, unfortunately not for the majority, and the medical authorities made the drug unavailable.
But Kate and one other gentleman went into remission….SHE'S A FIGHTER AND THERE WAS SOME HOPE!
Sadly eight months later Kate was told the words she didn’t want to hear…….her Blood Cancer was back. The other remission gentleman was also in trouble, and has since passed away.
With the original drug no longer available and chemo not an option for Kate her medical team are looking at another potent anti-cancer drug being trialled in Australia. Clinical trials have been delivering outstanding results for people with advanced leukaemia, who have exhausted all other treatment options…….Kate, Kristian and the boys have to try it.
Unfortunately this drug isn't on the PBS, and will come at a huge cost. Because Kate’s cancer is so rare she has been approved for special consideration but will still have to raise $20,000 for 6 months treatment.
Her family are united and strong but are struggling with the emotional, financial and physical stresses of this serious illness. They are an extremely proud family and have tried to do this on their own but have reached breaking point. Kate understands that the treatment may or may not work for her, but true to her fighting spirit she keeps smiling and is staying optimistic for a good outcome.
