I've been in Cusco for just a few days now and started volunteering with Maximo Nivel, an organization that places people at a variety of different sites which are in desperate need of some additional help. I am assigned to an emergency women's shelter that provides housing to single mothers and their children, most of whom are escaping situations of domestic violence. Due to the circumstances that these women are leaving in, most of them show up to the shelter with nothing but the clothes on their back. The shelter does the best it can to provide them with food, skills training, child care (that's where I come in), and other resources. However, due to the extreme lack of funding, many of the current families are living there without some super basic supplies like toothbrushes, soap, vitamins, etc. That is where, I'm hoping, you come in.
I'll be volunteering at their organization over the next three weeks and during my time here I would like to try raising some money to buy them some of these basic supplies that we so often take for granted. A little money goes a long way here in Cusco, so my fundraising goal isn't anything egregious. My goal is to buy things I need for the kids, (personal hygiene products, school supplies, arts and crafts supplies), along the way. I'd then use any additional donated money at the end of my time here to buy the shelter a surplus of some basics for the next set of families, and possibly some supplies for the mother's skills classes, things like cooking utensils, materials for textiles, etc.
It isn't a sustainable source of funding for them, and they are looking into some great options for that, but this organization is pretty new, and this money would have an impact on the handful of families currently living there. So, please, if you can spare a little time and a little cash, make a donation. I promise you are making a huge difference in the lives of these kids and I'll personally be making sure that the money is spent on the right things for them.
Love, Jess
