Jessica Smith Fights Breast Cancer

Meet our beautiful, funny, kind, loving friend, Jessica. She is a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, fiancé and friend. You take one look at her and you might think she has it made, maybe even has it easy. But appearances can be deceiving. You never know what battles someone else is facing in life. And cancer is not the first physical battle Jessica has faced. She is a seasoned fighter! And she is determined to kick cancer’s butt!
In June 2016, 33 year old Jessica was diagnosed with breast cancer, triple negative 2A carcinoma. She just started chemotherapy and will continue for the next 5 months. She will then undergo a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Her insurance deductible is almost $2,000 before insurance even begins to pay anything. And even after the deductible is met, she will still be responsible for a percentage of the medical bills, until she reaches the maximum out of pocket for her plan. Another issue is that she will temporarily lose her hair, due to the chemotherapy. You’d be surprised to know one of the least expensive, natural hair wigs can cost $1,300. The medical expenses and even the natural hair wig are a burden right now. Jessica happened to receive her cancer diagnosis just 3 days after closing on her first home. Any extra money she had previously saved was used to buy the house. So she now has the added responsibility and stress of being a new homeowner and paying a mortgage, on top of everything else.
Jessica has been battling Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis since the age of 11. https://www.crohnsandcolitis.com/crohns And this is something she lives with everyday, for the rest of her life. She’s has had multiple surgeries and difficulties over the years. She has already faced so many battles physically, emotionally and financially, and has fought to maintain a normal life. Despite all these challenges Jessica has remained a vibrant, driven and inspiring person. Given all her experience as a patient, it’s no surprise Jessica decided to pursue nursing. Nursing allows her to turn her desire to help others into a full time profession. She graduated nursing school in December 2015 and is studying to take her state boards.

Jessica got engaged in November 2015. She longs to continue her wedding plans and have a family of her own one day. However, she was informed she will have to be cancer free for 2 years before trying to have a baby. And that there is a high possibility IVF treatment will be needed, in order to have children. She is just taking things one day at a time and trying to remain positive and hopeful. However, all of the current and future expenses are a big concern. She is not even going to be able to keep up with her monthly bills when she has to go on medical leave, due to reduced salary. And we really don’t want Jessica to have this added stress while battling breast cancer. She needs to focus on getting better, without all the financial concerns weighing on her.

Let’s pull together and support Jessica through this tough time, so she can focus on kicking cancer’s butt! Any donations, shares, thoughts and prayers are appreciated, more than you know! Thank you and God Bless!
Sincerely,
Robin, Melina, Josie & Lori
