Jessica needs a kiln.

Hi! I’m Jessica. I make functional ceramics.

A lot of lives have been disrupted since March of 2020, and also that’s when my work was forced to stop.

My long term goal has always been to make a living from the functional objects I create, and I was on my way toward that goal prior to the crisis.

As you may know, making ceramics requires a specialized kiln, an extremely hot oven required to harden the formed clay. I had been using the kiln at the Beechmont Community Center for my work, but when the coronavirus hit, the community center closed its doors. Now, after nearly a year without being able to make anything, it is starting to take a toll on my mental health. And with no signs of the virus letting up, I realize that I have to buy my own kiln.

Typically, I would just buy one on a credit card and figure it out later. But with day-to-day life being so uncertain, that kind of move just feels too irresponsible. So I am breaking down and asking for your support.

I have been proud to work independently and to be able to manage on my own, so even though the thought of asking for outside financial help is pushing me toward a panic attack, I know that in order to be successful, I cannot go further into debt.

And rather than being indebted to a faceless bank, I would much rather be able to thank you for your assistance in helping me succeed.

Anything you might be able to contribute would be appreciated more than I can say. So, so much.

About my new business name:

I decided to call my ceramics business Inget Spöke for a few reasons, not the least of which is that I just like the way the words look together. The name means No Ghost in Swedish. I am really inspired by the simple, beautiful functionality of Swedish design, and my favorite person to consult with about design lives in Sweden. I’m pretty sure most ceramicists would agree that the movie Ghost gets mentioned a little too often around us. So the idea of hiding the words No Ghost in the name of my business is silly, in a good way. I know most people will not be able to pronounce it, but I’m okay with that. I look forward to hearing new variations of it.
