Jess vs. Cancer, vol 2

Our dear friend, Jessica Campbell, was recently diagnosed with a very rare form of Leukemia called Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, or APL for short. Unfortunately, Jessica (or Jess) is not new to the cancer scene, having survived breast cancer and a double mastectomy within the last five years. It’s probably why when she started getting strange red rashes on her body, she knew to take it seriously and see a doctor immediately. It’s also why she understands the value of good medical guidance and why her family helped her transfer to the best cancer hospital in the country, MD Anderson in Houston. They worked hard to ensure Jessica receives the best care possible and persevered through many hurdles to do so.

I, Theresa, met Jess working sports chartered flights together and was lucky enough to partake in the utmost shenanigans with her in the back galley for five great seasons. One thing about Jess is she is a ton of fun. Whether it was from jamming to her speaker she brought for everyone (there was no shortage of dancing in the C-Zone), playing cards or talking shop with the team, people were drawn to her. Through her first diagnosis, her incredible strength shined through. From day one, she solidified the mindset of doing what needed to be done and that she would beat breast cancer, no exceptions. Her ability to maintain that positive mindset through countless appointments, tests, treatments, and ups and downs was admirable. Now, with her recent diagnosis of APL and having to face cancer again, Jess is still finding humor where she can and staying true to the warrior that we know her to be.

I, Sarah, met Jess working as a flight attendant several years ago, but we became close in 2020 when we were furloughed from our jobs and moved in together to help pay the bills. It was a tough time for everyone but even more challenging for Jess. She had just finished her cancer treatments and various surgeries related to her recovery. She was starting the process of getting back to a sense of normalcy when her life was uprooted by the pandemic. Luckily, our covid struggles were short-lived, and she began to get back on her feet and start the search for a permanent place for her and her two sweet pups, Roxie and Cooper. We were thrilled when she was finally able to get her own home in 2021, and things were beginning to feel optimistic again when the fatigue and rashes began. I (and several other friends) sat with her in the hospital while doctors ran test after test to determine why her white blood cell count was virtually non-existent. We knew a bone marrow biopsy would most likely hold the answer to our questions, and when the results came in, Jess tackled the diagnosis head-on and made a plan.

Jess is a fighter and has been for longer than we’ve known her. She not only kicked breast cancer’s butt but is also fighting to kick APL to the curb now, too! Jess is an inspiration and a pillar of strength. Although we are optimistic, she still has a long road to recovery ahead of her. She has taken a financial hit as she had to go straight into treatment once diagnosed, losing her ability to work for 1-2 years. Recovery is now her job. This diagnosis, compounding with her previous recovery costs, has become a point of unnecessary stress and anxiety at a time when her focus needs to be on her health. To alleviate one area of worry for her, we have set up this Gofundme; and with your help, we can have our fun-loving Jess back and healthier than before!

If you choose to help Jess monetarily while she navigates this new leukemia diagnosis, your donations will go toward:

Hospital expenses not covered by insurance
Basic living expenses (mortgage, groceries, etc)
Gas to and from the hospital for daily treatments, as well as car maintenance for reliable transportation
Medications in a new trial study for the treatment of APL

Jess also has an Amazon wish list, if you’d prefer a physical gift:

Cards or flowers are also welcome at her new, temporary residence:

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is an aggressive type of acute myeloid leukemia in which there are too many immature blood-forming cells (promyelocytes) in the blood and bone marrow. This build-up of promyelocytes leads to a shortage of normal white and red blood cells and platelets in the body. It develops in about 600 to 800 individuals annually in the United States.
