Jesse gives so much to our kids and our community – now it’s our turn to give back!
While on a research/work trip in Chile, Jesse Carmichael shattered her left hip in a freak accident. Unfortunately, she will require hip surgery. She’ll need financial assistance to cover medical costs and living expenses in the coming weeks and months. Jesse -- as ever -- is brave, tough, resilient and above all optimistic. Let’s start her on her way to recovery ASAP!
Jesse is the director of Biocitizen LA, a non-profit outdoor school in Los Angeles. She spearheaded the organization in 2016 and has been working hard to build it ever since. Students learn through direct hands-on physical exploration; the program teaches kid about our ecosystems, history and environment through physical and mental contact. During these classes, kids learn caring, stewardship and connection and strengthen the relationships between themselves and where they live.
The program is centered in Echo Park and Malibu. Jesse and her staff are dedicated to experiential education of these young minds...an element that is sorely missing in the great majority of Los Angeles schools. LA needs her!!!
Jesse was on a 5-week R & D trip in Chile – looking at ways to establish ties and explore exchange possibilities between outdoor schools in the states and Chile. She’d just returned from a 32-kilometer trek through the Dientes de Navarino circuit with a group of students and had experienced, as she puts it, “some of the most pristine mountain/river/forest landscapes I’ve ever seen.” After the trek, she was relaxing on the porch of a friend, on the island of Puerto Williams in southern Chile and, ironically the next moment, she’d mis-stepped, tumbled off the porch and found herself on the ground with a shattered left hip, barely able to move, no less walk. She is beyond grateful to the people of Puerto Williams who compassionately cared for her after the accident.
The hip surgery she needs is complicated and with a lot of work and physical therapy afterward. We're happy and relieved to report she should recover fully, but the physical therapy and after care will take time and money. Insurance will cover some of her costs, but not all of them – not by a long shot.
Some of you may know Jesse through your kids and program classes; some may know her as the longtime manager of Fix Coffee. And still others may know her as a parent at LFCSA, King Middle School or LACHSA or as a community advocate in Echo Park. However you’ve come to know Jesse, we can all agree that she’s a generous-hearted, wise, loving and delicious person.
It’s tough for Jesse to ask for assistance, so we’re asking anyone who knows her or who’s heard about and appreciates the amazing work she’s doing, to pitch in whatever way they can – financially, physically, emotionally – to help our dear friend.
Our goal is to raise $ 40,000! We’ll get there! Let’s get Jesse back out in the field where she belongs -- exploring with the kids!
Thank you in advance for your generosity and help!
