Chipping Away at CANCER!!

Written by his daughter, Misty:
This is my dad, Jesse Nieto. A few weeks ago he woke up with his arm swollen, discolored, and painful. An emergency room visit for a blood clot turned into a few days hospital stay, where we learned of a large mass in his chest. We decided to go to MD Anderson for answers. Many tests and biopsies were ordered and everything seemed to happen so quickly. We suspected cancer, but the shock of the words actually coming from the medical staff was earth shattering. We could have never imagined this would happen to our family. You feel like the wind has been knocked out of you and you hope that at any moment you will wake up from this nightmare, only you don't. He was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

He began chemo treatment on Monday, February 9 and has to be admitted for 5 days every 21 days for a minimum of 6 cycles. He will have to travel back and forth to MD Anderson for lab (2 times each week), weekly injections, imaging scans, and other tests. Parking at MD Anderson is an average of $15/day and the drive is roughly 45 minutes. His prognosis is good, however the medical expenses are not. My dad is retired and works as a Marshall at a golf course. My mother keeps children out of their home. Neither of them will be able to maintain their income as before and the last thing we want is added stress on a very stressful situation. My brother and I are doing everything we can to help, but it adds stress to my parents when we try to help with finances as they want to be able to do for themselves. It is going to be up to us, friends and family, new friends and sympathetic unknown friends, to build a financial support base that my mom and dad can turn to when the time comes. This has happened suddenly, with no warning and no ability to plan. In fact, we don’t really know where exactly this will go – only that it will go and my mom will take off work to be by his side, there will be unexpected expenses, and there will be medical costs that exceed what the insurance will cover. One thing we don’t want is for him to stress about the financial part of battling cancer. We are reaching out to you as my Dad is not the type to ask for help. Your support is greatly appreciated and will go to helping in every way possible. Most importantly, we ask for your love and prayers. Let's help take one thing off of his plate so that he can focus on getting well.

Anyone that knows my Dad knows that he is a fighter and will take this cancer head on. He will need all the love, support and positivity he can get from his family and friends. He thoroughly enjoys all of the well-wishes he has received on Facebook, so please keep them coming!
