Jess, Max and Lexi’s vet bills and rehabilitation

Hi my name is Caroline. On Wednesday 16th July there was a gas explosion at my brother’s house, he was at home with his 3 dogs, Jess, Max and Lexi. All four occupants were badly burned. My brother is in the burns unit, he has 32% burns to his face, arms, back, hands and one knee. He has had surgery and is expected to be in hospital for at least a month. With several months of rehabilitation and outpatients appointments.

The 3 dogs Jess 12, Max 10 and Lexi 15months were all burned in the fire, with injuries to eyes, ears, noses, mouths, torso, legs and paws. After an initial visit to the vets they came home with me, where I continued to tend to their wounds and needs. Max’s paws were particularly bad, whilst Lexi’s underside and inner thighs have extensive wounds. Jess appeared to have got off the lightest with a few burns on her torso and stomach. All have nose, eyes and ear burns.

Max is a big dog, his paws needed dressing daily, a process which he didn’t enjoy, I struggled to get near his tummy area and Max got quite upset. On Monday I wasn’t happy with his paws so took him back to the vets where he was admitted, given fluids, I.V antibiotics and pain relief. He is still an inpatient and has to be sedated so they can tend to his wounds.

Last night Jess took a turn for the worse and after discussion with the vets it was decided that the kindest thing for her was to put her to sleep. She was a quirky little dog with a big personality and it broke my heart saying goodbye to her. Today I had to break that news to Richard.

So far the vet bill for these two alone stands at £1200.

Lexi is under the care of my daughter, having regular dressing changes and therapy to keep her moving. She is wearing baby grows to stop her licking her wounds.

We are expecting these costs to rise significantly.

Any money kindly donated will be used towards the vet bills, rehabilitation and care of Jess, Max and Lexi.
