Hi, I am Jerri McBride. I have been thinking about starting one of these accounts for a while now, but I didn't want to feel like a beggar or a charity case, so here goes.......
I am an only parent of 3 wonderful children, Macy, 13, Makara, 12, and River, 9. we have had some very trying years recently, starting in 2013.
In Feb 2013, some of you already know, my children lost their dad, leaving me behind to take care of them on my own. We were making it okay, I was working part time and we got the Social Security Survivor's check each month. Then, on July 4, 2013, I was injured in a firework accident, that left me blind in my right eye. After many trips to Wake Forest Baptist Health Eye Center to see numerous specialists and have numerous surgeries, I was told that 95% of the stem cells were burned out of my eye and the only way to fix it and possibly get my vision restored was to get a Limbal Stem Cell Transplant. So my next step was to just wait it out until the scar tissue stopped growing and get referred to a specialist who could do the transplant. A little over a year later, I was referred to Duke Eye Center to see the cornea specialist who could transplant the cells.
After 5 months of trying to get O.R. time, I finally received a surgery date of January 20, 2015. I have had the surgery and am doing okay, BUT cant work yet again..... That is where I need your help..... I have been ordered by my surgeon to take 3 months off work for optimal results from the transplant. After having been working for only part-time and being the only contributor to our household's finances, I never had any extra money to put up for a "rainy day" so to speak. I fortunately have short term disability coverage through my job, but it pays only less than half of my normal salary. I realize that every little bit helps, but $125 a week, plus the small Social Security Survivors check that we receive each month is not enough to support and feed a family of 4.
With your help, it could be a little easier and less stressful! Thank you in advance!! Any amount will help!
Be Blessed!
