The Man. The Myth. The Legend.
On Tuesday December 14, 2021 Jerry suffered a massive stroke while at home. He fought for several days in the hospital and passed peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday December 19, 2021. Jerry is survived by his wife Donna, his son Jack, his daughter in law Rachel, and his very first grandson Malcolm.
If you knew Jerry then you know you're one of the lucky ones. Jerry was a friend to anyone he came in contact with and the life of every party. Jerry could literally light up a room with his presence and his laugh was something you just couldn't ignore. He was one of five boys and very close to his brothers even in adulthood (if you've ever been to the annual Schanks Family 4th of July Bash you know what I'm talking about). Jerry loved his wife Donna, Da Bears, the White Sox, and his Jackie Boy more than anything in this world - well that is until his Grandson Malcolm was born just 6 weeks ago. Jerry was so excited to become a "Grampi" and I know that the loved ones he leaves behind will make sure Malcolm knows just how great of a Grampi Jerry would have been.
In 2016 Jerry was diagnosed with cancer. The prognosis was grim but with the encouragement of his family, and the support of his wife Donna, Jerry chose to fight. After that diagnosis each milestone was made even more precious; each additional year a gift. Anyone could see that getting to watch his son Jack get married and become a father gave Jerry so much pride. We will all be forever grateful for these past few years of memories we were able to share with Jerry, even though it brought a great deal of suffering while he pursued his cancer treatment in order to do so.
This fundraiser is to help alleviate some of the financial strain that Jerry's 5 years of cancer treatment, and now passing, has put on his immediate family. Jerry was a fighter down to his last breath, but his fight was shared with those closest to him. Even the smallest of donations would be appreciated.
Due to Jerry's passing being so close to the holidays a celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. More information will be provided for those interested in attending.
