Support for Jeremy Hatch's ALS Diagnosis
Donation protected
Family and Friends,
Recently my brother, Jeremy, started feeling some tingling in his hands. Unsure of what it was and what to do about it, the tingling eventually progressed to the point where he wasn't able to use his hands at work. After countless doctors appointments, tests, needles, and prodding, Jeremy was officially diagnosed with ALS a few days after his 43rd birthday in June of this year. Unfortunately he has a rapidly progressing case.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a terminal neurodegenerative disease where a person's brain loses connection with their muscles. People with ALS lose their ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe over the span of a few short years. Today there is no cure or treatment that halts ALS and the drugs currently approved by the FDA to treat it are intensive and offer only a chance of a few more months to live. For this reason Jeremy has decided not to pursue them.
Being diagnosed with a terminal disease in the middle of a pandemic has been difficult for him and his family as there is always the threat of him getting covid and weakening his already fragile lungs. It also decreases the opportunity to see loved ones and simply get the hugs and emotional support needed during this time.
Particularly devastating to me is that our dad, Bill, died (at what I thought was young) at 56 from cancer. Seeing Jeremy face his diagnosis when our dad had an equally despairing path just ten years ago breaks my heart.
Right now Jeremy is using a walker for assistance and a wheelchair when he needs it. He has recently started using a ventilator at night to assist with his breathing and will soon be fitted with a feeding tube.
Jeremy and his loving wife Sarah have eight children and Jeremy has two older adult children. With his symptoms it has been difficult for him to financially support his family. I'm hoping to raise money to help them with their bills- medical and household- and to simply give them some relief during this time. If you are in a position to donate we would greatly appreciate it. Any amount is helpful and truly generous.
With love,
Bailey (Hatch) Hillner
