As many of you know Andre and Sarah welcomed their son, Jeremiah on July 8th. Jeremiah was prenatally diagnosed with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), meaning the left side of his heart (including his left ventricle) is critically underdeveloped and can’t effectively pump blood to the body. He is currently receiving a series of palliative care surgeries for single ventricle HLHS. The 3 heart surgeries include the Norwood, the Glenn, and the Fontan. These do not repair his heart but change its anatomy and physiology to work as efficiently as possible with only one pumping chamber.

Jeremiah underwent his first open heart on 7/12/22 at just 4 days old. His recovery has been a combination of highs and lows. A few days after his surgery he developed fluid build up around his heart which needed to be drained. Two weeks into his recover his oxygen levels dropped and he was placed back on the ventilator for support. Once back off the ventilator things started to improve. He was tolerating small amounts of bottle feeds, his vitals were stable and medications were being adjusted and transitioned from IV to oral form. On 8/7/22 Jeremiah went into cardiac arrest. He received 46 minutes of CPR and was placed on life support. On 8/11/22 he had a heart cath which helped explain his difficult recover. His left pulmonary artery and coronary artery were narrowed. His team performed a balloon procedure to help widen these areas. He remains on the life support, however with restored blood flow to his heart muscle and lungs his team is hopeful to start to wean the support so he can continue his recovery.

Andre and Sarah have been blessed with a strong support system. They are so appreciative of all the prayers, encouraging words, and help received this far in Jeremiah’s journey. I am starting a GoFundMe to help alleviate the financial stress so these busy parents can focus on Jeremiah. Donations will help with medical expenses, childcare for their older 3 children, food, fuel, and other expenses while they navigate this difficult time.

We’d love to see some familiar faces at the Funky Heart walk which helps support patients and families with congenital heart defects.
