On Thursday, January 9th, 2020 Jensen Prestwich was home with his 6-year-old daughter when he started to have severe abdominal pain. Because of the unbearable pain, Jensen drove himself and his daughter to the Emergency Room in Roosevelt, Utah. Jensen had multiple tests and scans ran, a scan showed that Jensen had Perforated Diverticulitis which is an infection that could potentially spread throughout his body and he could go septic. Because of the possibility of a widespread infection, Jensen was rushed by ambulance to the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah.
When Jensen arrived to Utah Valley Hospital, he was immediately started on heavy doses of IV antibiotics. Jensen had a high fever and his white blood cell count was 30,000. Jensen was taken off food and water because the medical staff did not want anything to pass through the inflamed, infected colon. Because his colon was so inflamed, surgery was not an option due to the risks and complications that could arise.
Jensen's condition approved enough that they eventually performed surgery attempting to remove the infected colon. During surgery, the medical team discovered that there was more infected colon, and that over 3 feet of the colon needed to be removed. Because Jensen is only 34 years old the medical staff made the decision to remove a large section of his infected colon (18”), leaving some of the infected colon with the hope that the remaining infected colon will heal.
Because of the pain and discomfort that Jensen was experiencing, the days and weeks became very difficult for his wife, Jazmyne, and 2 children, Jaxson (9) and Katie (6). Both of Jensen’s children stayed home with extended family so they could attend school while he was in the hospital. His wife Jazmyne, while in her last semester in nursing school, drove 5-hours round trip each time she was able to go see Jensen.
Jaxson and Katie were able to see Jensen for 2 of the 22 days that he was in the hospital. Because Jensen has a very physical job, he will be out of work for 3-4 months. Jensen is the provider for his family and does not have enough leave to get paid for the full amount of time. Medical bills will be a burden to pay in years to come. The family has received many miracles and is very appreciative of any help that can relieve any financial stress.
