On 25 June 2026, Jenny Leinster was on her way to work when, in an instant, her life changed forever. She was involved in a devastating car accident that left her with catastrophic injuries, including a severe traumatic brain injury. Whilst fighting for her life, Jenny was placed into an induced coma and rushed to the Intensive Care Unit.

A week later, Jenny was put on a sedation hold in hope that she would wake up. However she remained in an unconscious state and the pressure within her brain remained high. Jenny was then transferred to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit, where specialists could closely monitor and manage her condition. An MRI scan revealed the full extent of her injuries, including two life-threatening brain haemorrhages and widespread microscopic damage throughout the brain and brainstem, known as diffuse axonal injury (DAI). Doctors explained that these injuries carried a significant risk that Jenny might never regain consciousness.

Hearing those words was utterly devastating. Jenny has always been the heart of our family—the person who brings everyone together with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support. She is selfless, compassionate, and has spent her life putting the needs of others before her own.

But then, just two days after we were told to prepare for the worst, Jenny defied all medical expectations.

She woke up.

While family and friends kept vigil at her bedside in Neuro Intensive Care, Jenny showed the strength and determination that have always defined her. Against the odds, she began the long journey back to us, giving our family the hope we had been desperately holding onto.

Since waking, her recovery has been filled with enormous challenges. She is currently unable to speak and has very limited movement. The road ahead will be long and demanding, requiring months of specialist neuro-rehabilitation, as well as extraordinary patience, courage, and support.

Despite these challenges, Jenny continues to show us she is still fighting.

Unable to communicate with words, she found another way to tell us what mattered most. Using her weak left hand, she wrote "I love you," on a scrap of paper. It was the first time she had been able to communicate since the accident, and in that moment she reminded us that the loving, selfless Jenny we know is still very much there.

Throughout her life, Jenny has dedicated herself to caring for others. As a support worker, she has spent her career improving the lives of vulnerable families. Outside of work, she devoted herself to her precious grandchildren, Oliver and Daisy, and became the primary caregiver for her mother-in-law throughout her battle with dementia. Whether for family, friends, colleagues, or complete strangers, Jenny has always given more of herself than anyone could ever ask. Now it is our turn to give back to the remarkable woman who has given so much to everyone else.

Our greatest hope is that Jenny can regain as much independence and quality of life as possible. While no one can predict what her recovery will look like, we remain hopeful that with the right rehabilitation, specialist care, and ongoing support, she can achieve the very best outcome.
