***Update March 30, 2026*** Below!
Hi everyone,
This update is long overdue. We are at a major turning point, full of both hope and uncertainty. I’m asking for your help to get us through this next phase and reach the goal of this GoFundMe that my dear friend Janee created for us.
We also just received the keys to our new two-bedroom apartment, but we need your help, as I am carrying debt related to this transition and still facing many essential expenses.
This is a huge step forward, but it comes with significant financial strain. We are facing high deposits, moving costs, travel to retrieve our belongings from storage in Corvallis, and the need to replace basic furniture and household items we lost during the hardships we experienced in Seattle, both before and during my diagnosis.
Over the past year, I have completed what is called frontline treatment for Stage 4 High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer, which is an aggressive and advanced form of cancer. This included 6 rounds of chemotherapy and a very major 8-hour surgery, followed by over 3 months of basic recovery followed by more chemo that just ended in early March as my son was turning 11.
While I was able to ring the bell marking the end of this phase of treatment, doctors do not use words like “remission” or “no evidence of disease” for this diagnosis. The recurrence rate is high, and I now continue with ongoing monitoring at OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, including bloodwork, exams, and scans. I am doing everything I can both medically and through integrative care to beat the odds. I am doing trauma healing and many things to build our lives and utilize whatever time I have left. Your help will create a stepping stone.
Even with all of this, I am in a much better place than I was a year ago, and my child and I are deeply grateful for that.
We are still recovering from treatment and earlier last year when I was diagnosed with a tumor the size of a soccer ball that had already spread to my diaphragm, causing my lung to repeatedly collapse and fill with fluid. I underwent multiple procedures just to breathe, while also navigating a major relocation and beginning treatment.
Through it all, I continued caring for my child, who has been by my side except for brief times when I was hospitalized. He recently turned 11, and I helped him transition from homeschooling into elementary school during my treatment. He is doing well, and I am committed to supporting his health, stability, and future, especially after everything he has experienced.
We have a small family and limited support system, and while we are incredibly grateful for the help we have received, we truly need additional support right now.
The funds raised so far have helped us survive during the most critical times when I was unable to cook, drive, or manage daily life and toward temporary housing and treatment related costs. However, we are still carrying significant debt and ongoing expenses that insurance does not cover.
In addition to standard medical care, I am pursuing integrative oncology treatments to help manage side effects and improve my long-term outlook. These are essential, but costly.
At this moment, I am:
Moving into a new home
Managing ongoing cancer care and monitoring.
Recovering after being unable to work at all for the past year, and now slowly trying to rebuild income, knowing it will take significant time.
Facing the possibility of needing additional chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation in the future, and doing everything I can now to stay as healthy as possible to avoid putting myself and my child through that again.
Carrying debt from this past year.
Doing trauma healing and life building, working on recurrence anxiety and utilizing the time I have left to patent my child.
Working on projects that will not provide income for several months.
Living on a very limited disability income while rebuilding my strength.
Without a car, and working toward getting reliable transportation for medical appointments, daily needs, and caring for my child.
Working to enroll Zahavi in extracurricular activities and tutoring so he can stay engaged, supported, and off screens while I continue healing and rebuilding our future.
Covering the high cost of supplements and integrative therapies to manage chemo side effects, support recovery, and reduce risk of recurrence.
Trying to prioritize essential healing practices, time in nature, rest, and self-care which are important to my recovery but come with added costs.
Despite everything, I am continuing to move forward, focused on healing, stability, and creating a future for my child.
If you are able to contribute or share this fundraiser, it would mean more than I can express.
Reaching this goal will not cover everything, but it will help us meet immediate needs and avoid falling further behind as we rebuild.
Thank you for your kindness, your support, and your compassion. It has carried us this far, and we are so grateful to have you in our lives.
With love,
Jenn Maria and Zahavi
*****Update April 2025:
After multiple diagnostic tests & an IR biopsy, the doctors are now sticking with diagnosis of "at least" state 3C, ovarian cancer.
Jenn Maria spent 9 nights in- patient on surgery and oncology hospital floors in Oregon. She completed round 1 of chemo through IV during the last few days of a recent 9 night in-patient hospital stay, which was brought on by excess fluid repeatedly building up in her lungs
Navigation through the cancer diagnosis & treatment journey for Jenn Maria and loved ones it affects, particularly her 10 year old child, is still new and is constantly bringing on new & often more challenging circumstances for this mom and son. Zahavi is Jenn Maria'a top priority and inspiration for her to give healing its all.
They have already lost many aspects of pre-cancer diagnosis life, and are going through stages of grief while remaining grateful, optimistic, hopeful and persevering.
Maria continues to plan and support Zahavi's education, health, nutritional, social, and emotional needs and loves having him in her care as much as possible. Funds from this GoFundMe will be used in part to help pay for childcare during times when cancer treatment or sick days requires childcare and related expenses for activities and safe transportation
This mom is learning to accept and adapt to using a walker for more than short transitions around a small area, and keeping her kiddo moving while she interacts from seated, feet propped positions. Diversity in mobility is important for children and others to understand.
Pain and discomfort are not fully remedied by any prescribed or natural remedy, thus far and each moment is an intense moment of acceptance and working toward healing and feeling better for many more moments with her "sonshine".
The chemo treatment she is currently experiencing continues it's effects for 3 weeks until the next round.
She had her lungs & abdomen drained multiple times in the last few months & now has a Pleur X pleural effusion tube inserted to drain excess lung fluid near daily. The edema in legs has at least lessened since hospital discharge, likely due to both chemo drying up excess fluids from tumor & hot baths helping the blood flow. Edema is an ongoing part of her healing.
She is working toward acupuncture, massage, infrared saunas, vitamin C injections and other complimentary natural healing
modalities as well.
They are currently lodging 5 mins from the hospital in an accessible suite. Insurance does not cover it and the stay, which is necessary for a large part of this approximately 6-9 months of treatment.
All gofundme funds go to basic living, lodging, childcare and healthy, educational activities, health care needs not covered by insurance, and related expenses for this mom and son.
In addition, Jenn Maria. Is fighting for hospital patient Rights to appeal early risky discharges without having proper out of hospital supports in place that some insurance & hospitals try to override despite federal right.
She is fighting for municipalities to not be able to perform biased home housing health building code indirections that endanger health of families and the public.
Thank you.
With Gratitude,
Janee’ Herring
