My sister, Jennifer, is the mother of a beautiful 16-year-old and has found herself in the fight of her life to protect her daughter and ensure that she gets the treatment that she so desperately needs.
This beautiful 16-year-old girl suffers from major mental health issues that were caused by a severe traumatic crime against her. Last October she bravely chose to go into inpatient treatment at Randall's Children’s Psychiatric Center. This was done to learn how to cope with her past experience and move forward in her life.
Due to the downward spiral in her mental health, at the end of January she was transferred to the Trillium Children’s Farm Home campus in Corvallis. We were informed that going to the Children's Farm Home would be in her best interest, due to her rapidly diminishing mental health. The Children's Farm Home was supposed to be the "highest level of care" that the state had to offer. They would be able to provide her with more one-on-one counseling and a doctor that would be more attentive. They promised that they would call daily, give updates on how she was doing, and always have an open line of communication. Jennifer’s daughter would be in the best hands possible because this was the "highest level of care" in Oregon for our children. Putting her trust in them, she sent her daughter 2 1/2 hours south to the Trillium Children’s Farm Home.
The trust in Trillium Children's Farm Home was quickly found to be ill-placed. Whenever a call was made to check on her progress, no one would answer the phone. They would not return phone calls, and when you did get a hold of one of the staff, they couldn't give you any updates. The staff said that giving updates was not their job, and that one needed to talk to the therapist. A call would be placed to the therapist and he couldn't give an answer because he needed to check with the doctor and the floor staff. Nobody wanted to take accountability for reporting to the parents.
Not able to get updates on her daughter's condition, Jennifer started to panic. The therapist had called and said that her daughter was refusing medication, constantly being restrained, and refusing to drink water from an open container. My sister took her down 72 bottles of water for her to drink for the next few weeks, and it made it easier to track how much water was being consumed. After multiple weeks of asking, calling and begging them to track her water intake, the staff constantly made up excuses and would not follow through on monitoring her water intake. With every visit made, Jennifer saw her daughter’s condition deteriorate. She was losing weight and refusing to get out of bed.
Our nightmare quickly worsened when a call from the Farm Home came . They also informed us that she had stopped eating and drinking for the last 3 to 4 days that they knew of. When my niece tried to eat or drink, she would throw up.
A phone call was again made to the therapist and he said that he was not aware of this situation, but would get to the bottom of it. By the next day, she had been hospitalized, and we were not notified of this for 4 hours. When Jennifer called her therapist the next morning her condition was so severe that Jennifer's daughter had to be transported by a mobile ICU ambulance back to Portland. When the ambulance arrived into Portland and Jennifer was able to see her daughter she immediately burst into tears, over the severity of the situation and her daughters condition.
The hospital in Corvallis said that she was severely dehydrated and that her potassium and phosphorus levels were far outside of the normal range. There was also a lot of strain on her heart. The doctor notified us that she was in re-feeding syndrome. And this hadn't happened in the short time stated by Farm House. This syndrome was discovered in the 1940's when people were released from concentration camps. They were so malnourished and dehydrated that when they finally were able to eat real meals, the calorie intake was too much for their bodies and hearts to handle, and it would kill them. It took my niece 10 days of being in the hospital, on a feeding tube and very strict diet, to finally become stable.
We were very fortunate that when my niece was able to be physically stabilized, she was transferred to Unity Center for Behavioral Health in Portland. For the first time since October, my niece began to improve by doing online classes, interacting and playing games with her peers, going to group sessions, going down to the cafe, watching movies, making eye contact, and moving her hair out of her face. These outcomes are remarkable and have made a positive change in her life.
Our joy in her progress was short lived. Since day one of her being moved into Unity, we have been adamant about her not returning to the Farm Home due to the concerns we have about what it will do to her progress. Due to an agreement between Unity and Farm Home, we have been informed by Unity that she will be transferred back to Farm Home on July 5th.
How can this be? How can she be transferred back to the place where they had to bring her daughter back in an ICU ambulance. What’s more, Jennifer has been reported to CPS and they are actively investigating her for not allowing her daughter to go back to Farm Home. All she wants is the best possible care for her daughter.
We have been doing everything that we can think of and engaging every agency possible to not let them transfer her back to Farm Home.
We have exhausted our family’s resources, and Jennifer, being a single working mother of 4, has also drained herself.
We are seeking donations to cover the cost of legal fees and missed hours of work due to the amount of time spent trying to fight for her daughter’s rights. Jennifer’s daughter has been a victim of a horrible crime, horrible mental health oversite and now she about to become a victim again!!!!!
Please help her fight in any way that you are able!!!!!
