..... but we are going to keep her anyway!!!
My friend Jennifer Leigh is about to go through her 5th spinal surgery on Wednesday, July 17.
Due to a birth defect, Jennifer's spine is degenerating at a rate that most of us could not handle. It has affected her ability to function normally, but she does a good job of taking advantage of good days, and masking her pain on the others. Some of the symptoms she is currently experiencing are loss of feelings in her legs and arms, nerve pain throughout her body, spasms due to the pressure on her nerves, and other more personal things that need no explanation.
Throughout her past surgeries (listed below) Jennifer worked full-time and raised her children, only taking time off recovering after each procedure. In February of 2019, she had to leave the job she held for 18 years to focus on her health while she was still (somewhat) able-bodied. Jennifer filed for disability, and her case is currently in appeal. She does not have health insurance this time around, and the surgeon's fees alone are more than the savings she is living on.
This time, her already fused neck will be re-aligned and connected with the T1 vertebrae to prevent further spinal cord damage. She risks losing mobility from the neck down, even the ability to breathe.
I would love for her tribe and those beyond, to help however we can. Be it $1 or $100, I know she will appreciate any help we can send her way.
Her past surgeries should have included a full bionic spine, but her Dr's have been able to do the following to keep her going thus far:
2003 C3/4 Discectomy & Fusion
2016 C5 Vertebrectomy & Fusion
2016 L5 360 ALIF/PLIF
2017 C4/C7 Fusion
Jennifer's portion of the cost this time is $42,457.08. Your help is appreciated more than you know.
