I am reaching out to my community to seek your urgent help in getting my 58yr-old mother the treatment she needs to conquer her recently diagnosed breast cancer.
The cancer, with three significantly large malignant masses, comes even as she has continued to deal with more than her share of pain and suffering ever since she underwent a contentious divorce while one of her children was seriously ill and receiving hospital care. As a result, she is no longer able to work the two very demanding, but low-paying (@$11/hr), part-time jobs in child-care that she held to sustain our family, albeit meagerly, for the past 6+ years.
Without affordable health insurance coverage for us, she has been unable to consult an oncology surgeon to review her diagnosis results and prognosis as no office will see her without insurance. We have found no openings with Parkland hospital well into the next year due to overload of patients. This is also delaying her surgery. While seeking medical help, she has also applied for various short-term benefits she could qualify for - unemployment, disability and ex-spousal social security. We hope these to come through in the next year, and help support her basics - food, shelter, transportation.
She has no assets or income to support her cancer surgery and medical care. We are waiting to consult a cancer surgeon to get good estimates for the costs. What we do know is that she must cover for surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, medications, doctor visits, tests and post-treatment follow-ups. These can be hefty even with good insurance. She is already under medical debt to the tune of $10,000 in trying to get herself diagnosed and receive emergency treatment resulting from cancer.
I have myself been out of steady work as a musician without sustained income. I continue to search for a job to be able to support my mother. She has been my pillar of strength through all the upheavals that we have gone through in the family. She maintains a positive attitude through all her troubles. There’s nothing more I could wish for than her return to complete health at the earliest. Your kindness is our support.
