On August 18, 2023, I woke up in the hospital and was greeted by a team of doctors who informed me I was in complete organ failure and on life support. I was diagnosed with end stage liver disease and only a liver transplant would save my life.
As some of you know, I suffer from a debilitating rare connective tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. This disorder has affected nearly every aspect of my life - physically, mentally and emotionally. With no cure and in constant pain, I began to self medicate and developed an addiction to alcohol. Alcohol became my best friend, it made my pain go away but it almost cost me my life. I was told this was the root cause of my diagnosis.
I spent the next 20 months in and out of hospitals, having tests, surgical procedures and financial battles with the health insurance companies. As my condition worsened, I learned of a potential option for me - a living donor transplant. In October 2024, I asked family members for help and after extensive screening, it was determined that my son Jordan was a perfect living donor match! At just 24 years of age, Jordan stepped forward to save my life. On April 1st of this year, our team of experienced doctors and nurses at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC successfully performed these surgeries.
Today, Jordan has fully recovered from surgery and his liver has completely regenerated itself to its full size. He’s back to work and his normal daily activities. I am still recovering and making progress every day, but face a long road ahead physically, emotionally and financially. As with any health issues , there are always expenses for the care one receives and we are no exception.
Between hospital bills, weekly tests and monthly medications, we are now facing financial hardships we never anticipated. It’s hard for anyone to ask for help and I never thought I would be in the position to have to do so, but I am. It would be much appreciated if you would please consider making a donation. Any amount, no matter how small, will make a difference for us, and if you’re unable to make a donation, then please consider becoming a blood donor or an organ donor. That too would be greatly appreciated.
It’s a miracle that I am alive today and I live in gratitude and appreciation for what this journey has taught me. I have been sober now for over 2 years and I am proud of my accomplishments. Receiving a second chance at life has made me realize how often we take things for granted. When I wake each morning, I already know it's going to be a good day, I'm alive!
With all my love and gratitude, I thank you.
