Late Friday night Jenna was rushed to the ER in excruciating pain, but unfortunately all the doctor did was take an EKG and advised her to go home and take ibuprofen. By Monday morning, she was in so much pain she went back to the hospital and finally they opted to run diagnostic tests. They immediately found giant gall stones and a worrisome mass on her kidney. The doctors knew they had to take out the gall stones immediately which would help with the pain but the mass on her kidney needed additional tests to provide her a sound diagnosis. Unfortunately, it was determined that the mass is cancerous, specifically, renal cell carcinoma. Jenna successfully came out of the gall stone surgery today, which will only provide temporarily relief as she is forced to wait for the doctors schedules to align to finally remove her gall bladder and all of her right kidney during the same surgery. The doctors are hoping that the removal of her kidney will remove her cancer and luckily her other kidney seems to be at 100% function, and she should be able to recover well from this in time.
Jenna is currently a licensed clinical social worker at Adventist and will be out of work for up to 12 weeks during this recovery. So on top of not being able to work, she will have mounting medical bills, even already being covered with medical insurance.
Thankfully, Jenna is back in Portland with her parents and her sister at her bedside, who are ensuring that Jenna is receiving the best care possible.
