Anyone who knows Jelena knows that she is very kind, positive, determined and brave. She is the first person to lend a hand, supports you when you have a challenge and always brightens your day with her smile. Today, Jelena is facing a challenge that she can’t overcome alone, and she is reaching out to our community for a helping hand.
In the fall of 2024, Jelena was diagnosed with a dislocated hip which then significantly exacerbated her Multiple Sclerosis. While waiting for the surgery, Jelena relied on her home support for her daily functioning as she was confined to a wheelchair. After waiting over a year, Jelena finally underwent hip replacement surgery October 30, 2025. Although the surgery was a success, Jelena unfortunately still cannot stand or walk, drive a car or work.
After her surgery, she was supposed to start intensive rehab and be transferred to a rehab facility immediately. Sadly, Jelena only had basic rehab in the hospital for 2 months before being finally transferred to Queens Park Care Centre. At Queens Park she was informed that she would only be getting treatment to make her feel comfortable being able to live in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
This was devastating news to Jelena as she had always planned to get back to walking, driving and working. Being the driven person she is, and while still in Queens Park, she recently obtained a second opinion by an independent third party physiotherapist who informed Jelena that her plans were possible and that the physio would be able to work with her to achieve these goals.
Jelena will need at least one year of intensive hands-on physiotherapy to get back on her feet (literally). She wants to achieve the baseline that she had before the dislocated hip happened - to regain standing, walking, driving and working skills.
Jelena was discharged from Queens Park on February 20, and it is critical that she have her physio treatment plan ready to roll as soon as possible.
While she is focused on healing, the financial reality of medical care is daunting. The cost for one year of intensive physiotherapy will be around $15,000. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have private insurance and BC Medical does not cover anything.
Your donations will go directly toward these physiotherapy sessions and transportation to and from these sessions. Every dollar raised will be withdrawn to pay Jelena’s physiotherapists directly for these services.
Thank you to everyone who is able to support and help Jelena achieve her desired goals.
Even if you cannot donate, sharing this page with your network means the world to her.
Thank you for your prayers, your kindness, and for standing with Jelena during this challenging journey.
