Jeffco Vamonos 21-22 Programs

Jeffco Vamonos has launched the ambitious mission of serving Jefferson County youth who are at-risk or lack resources, financial or otherwise, to have experiential learning opportunities.

We are focused on offering kids who have a high number of adverse childhood experiences and low socio-economic status the opportunity to see and learn new things.   Often, kids without the necessary resources miss these opportunities.  Learning new things and experiencing different places can impact the trajectory of their entire lives.

We aim to provide weekend trips in very small groups, with adult guidance and mentorship  We will travel to cultural centers in greater King County and navigate new experiences through culture and food.  As we explore the diversity of Washington state, we will try Indian, Ethiopian and pan-Asian foods.  We will visit fun cultural activities, from the pinball museum to the Ballard locks.  Students will also be provided with a little pocket cash to buy souvenirs.   Conversations about life and living will be had along the way.

At the end of the school year, participants will decide what meal we will recreate at home.  Local volunteer chefs have offered to guide us, as we shop for the goods (some of them weird) and create one of the meals that we have eaten to share with our community. Students will receive a food handlers card in the process.

Trips will be offered 18 times per school year, and students are welcome to join us multiple times.  Once we have fully funded our local trips, four high school students will have the opportunity to travel to San Bartolo, Mexico for ten days to have an abroad experience.  Learning to navigate in another language is a big, confidence-building step.   We will travel cultural sites, explore natural wonders and eat machaca and dulce de leche.

Our board is comprised of community members,  teachers, and a behavior assistant.  Trips are led by Amy Bartlett. With a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology and a master's degree in educational psychology, Amy is working to help at-risk students engage with learning about the world around them while developing skills and gaining confidence.   Helping kids see beyond their immediate circumstances can plant a seed to dream bigger. Having navigated new places, kids have the confidence to try new things.  Having cool stories to tell sure doesn't hurt.

This is a very specific mission, designed to address the great need for support for rural, at-risk and impoverished youth.  We await our 501 c 3 status, and so cannot yet apply for most grant funding.  This year, our mission will depend on the benevolent support of our community.

Many of the resources for this program have been donated, staff time for the 21-22 school year is entirely donated. Your cash donations will go directly toward the kids having an experience; food in their bellies, pocket cash for souvenirs, a fun activity, and travel (gas and ferry).  It is our greatest hope that we can pull off funding the program for the 21-22 school year, but it will take a whole lot of people to believe in this mission.

After several years of working in a rural, public school, I can assure you that the need is there.  If you have it to give and believe that these kids who have previously lacked the opportunity deserve to see a world wider than the one they live in, to take a ferry, to visit the Pike Place Market, to have a mentorship group to learn and grow with, please consider a donation to our cause.   Really, every bit helps. Our deepest thanks.
