Dear Friends and Family,
I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to you with a request for help. My brother, Jeff, has recently been diagnosed with stage 2 seminoma testicular cancer.
Jeff's cancer began when a swollen testicle was discovered by his GP in October 2022. Unfortunately, scheduling issues and a canceled surgery date due to insurance coverage problems postponed treatment. On December 28th of that year, Jeff underwent a radical inguinal orchiectomy (testicle removal) on the right side. The surgery was a bit more complicated due to a hernia surgical mesh from two years prior, and the doctor stressed the importance of getting to the operating room ASAP, given the significant growth of the affected area.
Upon removal of the testicle, the pathology report indicated good borders (meaning they got it all), but that lymphatic material was found in the tumor resulting in a stage 1B cancer diagnosis. CT scans right after surgery showed no spread, and the bloodwork dropped into the normal range. Things seemed a bit more calm at this point. Cure rate wasn't 100% but it was pretty good, and a five year observation plan began.
In late November 2023, a routine CT scan revealed concerning findings in the abdomen and pelvic area. Subsequently, a PET scan in December 2023 provided further insight into the extent of the situation, showing some more cancer in the lymph nodes, putting Jeff in stage 2 of seminoma testicular cancer. Fortunately, this is a highly treatable and survivable form of cancer, and soon Jeff will begin radiation treatments targeting lymph nodes in his pelvic area over a three-week course of treatment, five days a week.
On a brighter note, Jeff is feeling okay! The cancer has been largely asymptomatic aside from surgery recovery and lots of pokes in the arm. Tucson has an exceptionally good medical community, and he has been fortunate to end up with some of the top doctors in the area. However, the financial strain of medical expenses is immense, and we find ourselves in need of your support.
Jeff is self-employed as a guitar repair technician with a high-deductible insurance plan, and to add to the problem his deductibles reset at the worst times, so he never had a chance to max out his plan in 2022 or 2023, and 2024 is a fresh start. At this point, Jeff has paid most of his medical expenses directly in cash at the negotiated insurance company rates. As you can imagine, that has quickly drained all of Jeff’s finances, and he has been borrowing money to cover medical treatments. And now, the treatments and expenses begin again.
This is where we ask for your help. We have set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to support Jeff's ongoing medical expenses. Please consider contributing to Jeff's medical fund and sharing the campaign with your network.
We understand that times are tough for everyone, and we appreciate any support you can offer. If you are unable to contribute financially, your thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes are equally appreciated.
With gratitude,
Justin
