Jeff Oakes

Jeff Oakes is a friend. He is a neighbor. He is a volunteer.  He is an advocate for others.
A husband, a father, a man, and a fighter. 
     About four years ago, Jeff was diagnosed with cancer.
Jeff was given only a few months to live, the prognosis was grim.
Jeff treatment protocol included a combination of treatments including medical cannibas.
He credits the cannibas for keeping him alive and helping him to have a better
quality of life during his fight. 
During his battle with cancer, Jeff also known as " The Mighty Oak" has been  traveling around the state to municipal meetings advocating for medical cannibas for himself and others.  Yes, it is
approved but there are many obstacle the patients face making treatment difficult.  
    Since Novemeber, when Jeff began his 40+ round of treatment he has been hospitalized 6
times. This was due to infections associated with the port site and other complications.
Jeff is not on a hunger strike as stated in a recent newspaper article.  He has has been
unable to keep food down and has dropped to 140 lbs.  One of the thing that helps him with this is his medical cannibas. Unfortuantely, it is not allowed in the hospital so the many
times Jeff has been hospitalized he has had to do without. 
  This week at an oncology appointment Jeff was told the cancer has spread.
It was also confirmed that his body will not tolerate the aggressive chemotherapy,
treatment #44. The Dr. has suggested an alternative treatment which is NOT a curative
medication, yet it will give him a bit more time.  Three to 9 months, if it works.  
The family is  just reading up on the treatment and digesting this all themselves. 
Jeff  thinks he wants to give it a try. 
There are many side effects and they will need to see how Jeff tolerates it. 
     A huge drawback is the price tag  associated with the treatment, $10,000 for one month.
Jeff, can not start with out first  finding out what his insurance will cover.  At best if it is 80% they will still be responsible for $2,000 per month.
I can only imagine what  they are already  paying toward Jeff's treatments and care.
I do know that  Mary, has been out of full time work for some time. She took some time off
to care for Jeff during treatments and after several surgeries.  They soon realized that caring for
Jeff does not allow  the opportunity to work full time. Pat, Liam and Maura, the  Oakes' children,
contribute to the family in many ways. Maura is presently a college student and works part time.
The boys help around the house while working full time themselves. 
   I am asking you, to help me help them.
Let's  ease the financial burden and allow them to concentrate on healing and time with family.  
   I am asking for more than the $2000, insurance best case scenario, due to the fees
associated with this site. (not knocking the site, I think it is a great platform)
I  was also  honestly thinking that a little more would help them  for gas to and from
appointments, food or even a utility bill this month. 
 I know that we all have our own worries and  struggles.
I also know that " helping one person may not change the world,
but it could change the world for one person".
