In February 2021, my nephew Jeff was diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. It has been non-stop doctors appointments and tests in February and March. He has a port in his right shoulder (for chemo) and a feeding tube to his small intestine. On March 25, 2021 he had his first chemo treatment and today, March 29 he has his first radiation treatment. Chemo is once a week and radiation is five days a week. He also sees a nutritionist once a week.
After all the treatments are completed, more tests to see if the tumor has shrunk enough for surgery. Surgery will be to remove the portion of the esophagus with the tumor then reconnect the esophagus. With prayers now and during is long recover he will be cancer free and able to eat solid food again. He is now on a liquid special protein drink diet to build up his weight (he has lost 25 pounds) so that he can be ready for surgery. He is learning to feed himself through the feeding tube which will be the only way he gets nutrition for at least 6 to 8 months.
Jeff is an assistant store manager for Dollar General in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. He loves his job, especially "helping my older customers find what they need in the store". His co-workers, store and regional managers have been very supportive. He kept working up until a week ago but his energy level, the feeding tube and now the beginning of chemo and daily radiation prevent him from continuing.
Jeff will face huge medical bills. His family is helping as much as possible but we are asking for help to pay medical bills and rent to keep a roof over his head while he fights cancer. Jeff has a great support system of family, friends and neighbors. His attitude is great and he fully intends to win this battle.
We hope you can help him in this battle.
