Jeanne Genchur-Haywood Spinal Cord Injury Fund

On October 27th 2019, Jeanne's life changed in ways no one could imagine. While visiting a friend out of state, Jeanne suffered a life-threatening fall which resulted in emergency spinal surgery. She sustained serious and significant damage to her C4 & C5 vertebrae, which directly affects spinal cord functioning. She stayed in intensive care for several days as doctors tried to control the swelling. When she was stable enough on November 12th 2019, she was airlifted to the Mount Sinai Hospital Spinal Cord Injury Center in New York to be near friends and family during her recovery.

As a result of her spinal cord injury, Jeanne is now a quadriplegic, which means she can move her arms only very slightly but has no movement in her wrists or hands, as well as only slight movement in one leg with no ankle or foot movement or control.  She also has no sensation below the level of the injury.

Jeanne was reluctant to reach out via social media or for any support instead wanting to focus on the task of recovery as well as not wanting to burden anyone during the Thanksgiving holidays.  Jeanne is a warrior and is working tirelessly in physical and occupational therapy in the hopes of one day recovering some mobility. Doctors are also trying to get her blood pressure under control and deal with her other medical issues as a result of the injury.  The recovery process for Jeanne is a long one -- about 6 months to a year. She is able to communicate but is totally dependent on others for her basic daily functions and doctors aren't sure what level of mobility, if any, she will gain.

Jeanne is not giving up and is fighting as hard as she can, and we will do the same. We have set up this GoFundMe page in order to help Jeanne and her family with these huge and unexpected expenses.   We are asking for your generous support as a ramp has to be constructed so that she can return home and for the expenses of the daily care she will require. In addition, much of the specialized equipment needed for her is not fully covered by insurance. This includes such items as; a customized motorized wheelchair, motorized air inflated medical bed, electric patient lifter, home care nursing expenses, and transportation to the doctor.

From her hospital bed, Jeanne sends her wishes to you and your loved ones for a healthy and happy holiday season and a blessed New Year.

Jeanne is grateful for and thanks you for your kindness, prayers and thoughts at this incredibly difficult time.
