Help Maya beat Cancer!

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Sandra Estupinan Gomez. I am making a GoFundMe account for my sister and her family. Specifically, I want to share the story of Maya, my sister’s daughter.

On Friday, February 10th my sister and her family went to the emergency room and were immediately transferred to a hospital in San Francisco where Maya began a series of tests. They were surprised to meet with an oncologist and were devastated when the doctors suspected cancer. Maya is a bright, active little girl who loves dancing and learning. We never imagined that this early in life she would have to fight something like this.

On Tuesday, February 14, Maya had an MRI that confirmed she has liver cancer, (hepatoblastoma), and in her case, it affects all quadrants of her liver, therefore she would need a transplant. The next day we were transferred to Stanford Children’s Hospital where Maya has now undergone 4 cycles of chemotherapy that have been difficult for her. Maya has had to relearn how to walk and is receiving physical and occupational therapy to help rebuild her strength and motor skills. Maya is now ready for a transplant and while this indicates progress in her treatment, this also comes with many challenges that she and the family know are to come while she recovers from a liver transplant.

As Maya and the family prepare for the transplant and recovery, this has heavily impacted them emotionally and financially. My sister and her husband both have had to leave work and my sister even went on maternity leave early to care for Maya. Additionally, my sister and her family spend the majority of their time at the hospital in Palo Alto where Maya is being treated. With that, they are also caring for their newborn child. During this difficult time, my sister and her family have found it challenging to juggle living expenses from paying their mortgage, traveling, food, medical bills, and other miscellaneous expenses that come with meeting the needs of their children as well as their own. We appreciate any help! Please share this page with others.

We will continue to update this page as treatment progresses.

Again, thank you all so much!
