Devon is a 22 year old young man with a huge heart and a passion for helping people. He's in a loving relationship with a beautiful girl. His family and friends love and adore him. When Devon walks into a room, he’s a bright light that doesn’t go unnoticed. He has this amazing and kind heart that you don't ordinarily see in someone his age. His first job was working at a no kill animal shelter where he adopted two of his own dogs. His first instinct is to always help others before he helps himself. He has a great sense of humor, loves God and has a positive outlook on life, even when his health is failing. He loves to play the guitar and sing. He loves to work out and spend time working on his car. He's very active and just recently he was accepted into nursing school which in and of itself is no small task. He worked very hard to get into the program and studied every waking moment. He is the only child of Lisa and Anthony and the three of them are inseparable.
On the outside, Devon is all of these wonderful things, but inside, he has a disease that is slowly killing him....IgA Nephropathy. Also known as Berger's Disease, IgA Nephropathy is a disease of the kidney and immune system. It is very aggresive and can eventually attack other major organs such as the heart and liver. It is a very rare disease and has no known cure. It causes high blood pressure, blood in the urine, pain in the lower back and edema (swelling of hands and feet). If caught early, the disease can be treated with blood pressure medicine, steroids and a strict diet. However, in Devon's case the disease has progressed much more rapidly than anticipated and he is in need of a kidney transplant. Devon's medical bills have already started mounting and the transplant hasn't even been scheduled yet. He also has other financial obligations such as nursing school and car payments. His parents are able to help but not as much as they would like. He has not been able to work in months and has already had several hospital stays, his first of many dialysis treatments as well as chemotherapy treatments to try to slow down the degeneration of the kidneys.
This Go Fund Me account has been set up to finance not only the kidney transplant but to assist Devon in keeping up with his regular bills and financial obligations. Since being diagnosed with this horrible disease, his goal is to continue to go to nursing school and specialize in nephrology so that he can help others who are battling diseases of the kidneys. The transplant list is long. If anyone is interested in donating a kidney, applications will be accepted as soon as we are completed with the process. Thank you to all for your help and generosity. God bless.
