Helping Hank Heal

Anyone who loves their pet knows that they are our families and our best friends. And if you've ever met Hank, you know exactly how easy it is to fall in love with him. And you know how committed and devoted Hank's owner, Kirby, is to this very special pup. Hank has kept Kirby going, day in and day out, through this last very challenging year of Covid19 and in the preceding four years since she adopted him in 2016.
On Tuesday March 23, 2021 Hank sustained a serious injury while doing what dogs do best, chasing squirrels. Hank's injury is characterized as a large degloving injury which happens when the top layers of skin and tissue are ripped from the underlying muscle, connective tissue, or bone. Degloving injuries are often life-threatening, because they involve large amounts of blood loss and tissue death. Hank's extensive injury spans the entire right side of his torso. Hank was a very, very lucky boy and was able to receive medical attention immediately, increasing his chances for survival and rehabilitation.
But Hank has a long road to recovery ahead of him. The initial emergency vet visit involved surgery, anesthesia, sedation, IVs, injectable medications, and hospitalization over night. Now recovering at home, Hank will be on pain medication and antibiotics, a special diet, and he will endure many weeks of follow-up wound care and monitoring, dressing changes, and at least one more surgery to remove dead tissue.
This has been a traumatic experience for Kirby and Hank. And the unexpected financial burden of medical care is rocking Kirby's world. It is extremely hard for any of us to swallow our pride and ask for help, but Hank can't do it on his own (and he doesn't have any money of his own to chip in) so it's up to us to help him - and his human, Kirby - through this financial challenge.
We understand money can be tight, especially now during Covid19, so we want to thank you for reading this, and we know that every little bit helps whether it's donating, sharing, or sending a get well message for Hank.
Hank brings a smile to everyone he meets, and Kirby is someone who has supported so many people through her advocacy and volunteerism across her life span. I am hopeful that we can come together to support them during this challenging time. #FriendsofHank
Hank in happier times. Let's put this smile back on his face!
